Dominican Republic nabs a ton of cocaine, arrests 2

Santo Domingo.- The National Drug Control Agency (DNCD) early Sunday seized 926 bricks of cocaine, worth around US$12.0 million, arrested two men, Dominicans, seeks two others and seized two boats and two trucks.

It said the drug from South America was seized near the Saona island village of Catuano, Bayahibe, eastern Altagracia province.

The haul in two parts were on the boats "El Socio" and “Judith” which DNCD spokesman Darío Medrano affirms were used smuggle to drug from South America along the country’s east region, especially Isla Saona, to be shipped abroad.

He said the two fugitives, actively pursued by the DNCD, had previously obtained a fishing permit in Bayahíbe as a way to conceal their operation.

Medrano said one Toyota and one Mitsubishi pick up trucks were also seized, after they were left at the beach by two men who fled into the mangroves.

The official said a Rapid Response Unit, including two Navy boats and two Air Force Super Tucano aircraft supported the operation.
