Dominican truckers again complain of attacks in Haiti

Santo Domingo.- Dominican Republic’s biggest truckers union (Fenatrado) on Tuesday denounced attacks on rigs loaded with cargo in Haiti, despite agreements between the two countries to protect freight.

The alleged attack is the latest act of violence against Dominican truckers near busy border crossings during the last few weeks.

It said the latest assault took place around 11 pm Saturday, on 24 trucks of its affiliates from the town of Cabral loaded with gypsum headed to a cement factory in the town of Cabaret, on the road to the city of Gonaives, Haiti.

The union said a group of people started hurling stones and other objects at their tractor trailers and drivers, despite being inside the cement plant under Haitian police escort.

In a statement Fenatrado warned that if the attacks continue, “the truckers we will be forced to suspend freight transport to the neighboring country, until Haitian and Dominican authorities agree to guarantee the safety of the vehicles, the drivers and freight."
