Dominican Republic cop dies as anti-corruption protests spread

San Francisco de Macoris, Dominican Republic.- One police officer was killed and unidentified arsonists torched a garbage truck and then shot at the City Council offices, as part of a 48-hour protest which paralyzed parts of the city in northeastern Duarte province.

Several City Council workers had to flee while the truck was being set ablaze and as the officers were pelted with stones. The shooting reportedly took place around 10pm.

No injuries were reported during the incidents, which police they investigate.

Barrio, political, social and community organizations of the central region had called the shutdown to protest the acquittals of senator San Juan senator Felix Bautista and San Francisco mayor Felix Rodriguez, both of the ruling PLD party, whom allegedly embezzled more than US$400.0 million.

Death in Salcedo

Amid yesterday’s protests a police officer was gunned down in the town Salcedo, in nearby Mirabal province, where protests also took place, and have spread to Santiago and Navarrete.
