Dominican Republic must solve its own corruption: US envoy

Santo Domingo.- United States ambassador James Brewster on Thursday said the fight against corruption is a long struggle which requires a Dominican response, solution and commitment, because in his view it “suffocates innovation and discourages foreign investment.”

He said the fight against corruption is also a long-term effort. "We all need to fight corruption; it’s a struggle that requires political will, education and commitment."

Brewster called Justice minister Francisco Dominguez a "champion in the fight against corruption," adding that "no external force can be the main catalyst that motivates a reform of the Dominican system to eliminate corruption."

The diplomat made his statements in the seminar "Corruption: Civil society’s and the business sector’s role in prevention and prosecution," hosted by the American Chamber of Commerce.
