Dominican Republic’s president closer to reelection

Juan Dolio, Dominican Republic.- Dominican Republic’s ruling party (PLD) on Sunday acknowledged president Danilo Medina’s sustained popularity by approving a draft a amend the Constitution, paving the way for him to run again in the next election.

The decision was approved by the Political Committee, the PLD’s top echelon, said PLD general secretary Reinaldo Pared at a press conference.

Speaking at Metro Country Club in Juan Dolio where the meeting held the ruling party spokesman also said the PLD unanimously decided to postpone the talks on its internal electoral calendar, to await the outcome of what could be the Constitutional amendment to allow consecutive presidential reelection, such as United States.

He said the Political Committee appointed several members to draft the bill that would submitted to the National Assembly to amend the Constitution,

"We’re introducing this change in the current Constitution, in order to make it possible for president Danilo Medina to choose to be a candidate for the next election," Pared said.
