‘Tit for tat’ motors Dominican leader’s reelection bid

Santo Domingo.- It was "tit for tat" that motored the proposal to pave the way for president Danilo Medina to seek another term by also offering supporters of former president Leonel Fernandez the chance to seek reelection in their current posts.

The agreement calls for approving a constitutional reform to allow the President’s consecutive reelection.

The "reelection for reelection" offer from the lawmakers who support

Medina was made to legislators who thus far have refused to rally behind the decision by the Political Committee, the ruling PLD party’s top echelon, to amend the Constitution so the president can run again in next year’s elections.

The drive to hammer out a pact within the PLD has gathered so much steam that Industry and Commerce minister José del Castillo on Tuesday said he’s even willing to sacrifice his own bid to become senator from Barahona,.

"It is likely that what arises would guarantee reelection, or at least the nomination to office, because the choice is made by the electorate in May next year, but at least the nomination to the position of those who now exercise as senators and as deputies of the PLD," del Castillo said.
