Despite pact, violent past weighs on major political party convention

Santo Domingo.- Presidential candidacy hopefuls of Dominican Republic’s second biggest opposition party on Thursday agreed to respect and abide by the results issued by the National Convention Organizing Committee, despite a history of purges and violent clashes.

PRM party spokesperson Milagros Ortiz Bosch said the agreement authorizes only the Committee president to provide information on the results in Sunday’s voting

She said the candidacy hopefuls also pledged to share the mandates of the campaign, and the organs of command, in complete proportionality with teams from other candidates.

Opposition leaders Luis Abinader and Hipolito Mejia and other hopefuls, as well as Organizing Committee members signed the 7-point agreement.

The announcement comes after months of infighting over senior posts within the PRM, which was created in the wake of a violent division of the country’s biggest opposition party, PRD.
