Former president admits defeat to rival in opposition party

Santo Domingo.- Former president Hipolito Mejia on Monday acknowledged rival Luis Abinader’s win in the opposition PRM party’s convention held Sunday, vowing to work with the political organization "as a soldier."

Mejia visited Abinader in his office and state his commitment to Dominican democracy. "We’re soldiers of the party and of Dominican democracy."

Amid applause from those present in a press conference in Abinader’s office, Mejía said the PRM’s opponents wishes of a failed convention "backfired."
