Catholic Church blasts government, judicial corruption

Santo Domingo.- In its Sermon on the Seven Words marking Holy Friday, Dominican Republic’s Catholic Church lashed out against government corruption and the actions of justice.

In its Easter Sunday message, the Santo Domingo Archdiocese called the Judiciary an embarrassment to Dominicans, who long for more transparency, truth and fairness, where rulings are handed down commensurate with the severity of the crime.

"There will come a day when we will convict not just the one who steals a salami to eat, but also heavy penalties for those who abuse their posts to steal,” and aren’t fooled by the party in power.

“A fair and objective justice will be the pride of the Dominican people," said the message read in a mass held at the Cathedral of America.

it said legislators and executive branch officials, “instead of making a maximum wage, should earn the minimum; instead of lying, tell the truth, instead of walking flaunting luxury autos, use utility vehicles like the rest of the people, instead of living in big mansions live in small buildings, like most of the Dominicans, instead of getting the best scholarships for their children, should be fir the children of the poor."
