Protest in major city demands jail for senator, mayor

Santo Domingo.- Dozens of community and politicalorganizations of San Francisco de Macoris (northwest) on Thursday are protestingthe acquittals of senator Felix Bautista and local mayor Felix Rodriguez,including the torching of tires.

The protest in thecountry’s third biggest city is expected to become more intense in the afternoonin the northern part of the city, to demand of justice to send Rodriguez to prison.

The march began 9amat a local park and went through several sectors until reaching the front ofthe city’s courthouse, where they tried to deliver a document to the prosecutorof the Appellate Court, but were blocked by police which cordoned off thebuilding.

The protesters then towent to the City Council where they picketed to demand the mayor’s resignationof the and indictment.

Among the protesters figuretthe PRM opposition party, the Dominican Humanist Party, Al-País, the DominicanTeachers Association o, Federacion Campesina Maxilimiliano Gómez, Felabel, amongothers.
