Government: Deadline for aliens stands; won’t talk extension

Santo Domingo.- The extension of the Reorganization Plan for people living in the country illegally isn’t a topic to be discussed by the Dominican and Haitian governments, said Foreign minister Andres Navarro on Tuesday.

He said however that it’s unfortunate that Port-au-Prince has yet to deliver on its promise to open three centers to provide origin documents to its nationals, so they could benefit from Dominican provisions.

"I say unfortunate because for us as the Dominican Government commitment is to include the maximum number of immigrants in the Plan and one condition was that their country would issue base documents," the official said.

Navarro said that has greatly limited process and have been unable to access more people in irregular status.

He noted however that they expect to make the necessary efforts in the one remaining month so people who’ve been unable to apply for the Plan can obtain all their documents.

He reiterated the government’s position that it will conclude the grace period as planned.
