Wildfires still rage in Dominican Republic’s east, north

Santo Domingo.- The Environment Ministry affirmed Tuesday that more than 500 firefighters work to permanently control the blazes in areas of the Los Haitises National Park (east) and Gaspar Hernandez township (north).

It called on the country’s business leaders, farmers and owners of wooded land and the population to adopt measures to prevent the start of wildfires.

In a statement Environment said more than 100 forest rangers were dispatched to the protected area of Los Haitises to continue putting out the outbreaks of fires in dozens of rugged places which have the highest average rainfall yearly.

It said around 200 Environment firefighters remain near Gaspar Hernandez fighting a blaze in that area.
