Police hurl tear gas at Haitian protesters demanding papers

Santo Domingo.- Dozens of Haitians were dispersed with tear gas fired by police Monday morning amid protests in front of the Interior and Police Ministry, to demand papers to legalize their status.

The agents fired tear gas as traffic was backed up on the busy intersection of 27 de Febrero Av. with Navarro St., where sugar workers from the neighboring country beat drums and chanted "we want the papers," required to register for the government’s program to legalize foreigners, which expires next Wednesday.

National Police agents have halted the advance by the protesters to keep them from reaching the Interior and Police Ministry headquarters, located in the government building El Huacal, in the Gazcue sector.
