Drones patrol Dominican Republic-Haiti border

Dajabon,- Dominican Republic.- Defense minister Maximo W. Muñoz on Tuesday launched the first patrol drones that will fly over the country’s border on a two kilometer radius.

He said two trucks will provide technical support for the four drones which feature real-time video.

Muñoz, quoted by diariolibre.com.do, said the drones will patrol the air over rough terrain not reachable by vehicles, where “a soldier would often take hours to get there."

The first stage of the program costs RD$850,000 for four drones, of 16 to be deployed along the border, the official said.

Ambitious mission

For his part Border Security (Cesfront) director Carlos Aguirre said the drones are a valuable new tool against illegal activities across the border such as human trafficking, smuggling and damage to natural resources.
