VP talks about feminicides, regrets “men don’t cry” phrase

Santo Domingo.– Vice President Margarita Cedeño on Friday said that there will not be equality "if we teach our children that men don’t cry but women do," elnuevodiario.com.do reported today.

At the opening of a seminar on the construction of new meanings of masculinity aimed at eradicating violence against women in the Dominican Republic, Cedeño stressed that more than one hundred femicides have been reported so far in 2015 in the country.

"We are alarmed with the amount of women who are killed by their partners," said Cedeño. "Violence will not stop if we continue teaching boys that men belong to the street and women belong in the home," she pointed out.

"There is also the culture of equal rights based on equality and dignity between men and women," said the Vice President, and added that "we have an anthropocentric culture of gender that promotes discrimination and violence against women."
