Dominican Republic ‘won’t’ deport a single Dominican

Santo Domingo.- The Dominican Republic will not deport one single Dominican and guarantees their protection, while complaints of statelessness of thousands of citizens of Haitian descent stem from erroneous information on the media.

Foreign minister Andrés Navarro made the statement Tuesday during a special session of the Organization of American States (OAS) Permanent Council, in Washington DC.

NGOs and several international organizations mostly fear that, after the deadline to apply for the government’s legalization program Dominican Republic not only will conduct mass deportations but in drag many people offspring born in the country of undocumented Haitians.

Navarro however provided details of the Dominican Government’s mechanisms to provide citizenship and documents for citizens of Haitian origin born on Dominican soil of foreign undocumented parents.

"The Dominican Republic is aware of and has demonstrated its commitment to international order, any abnormal situation will be resolved with the relevant mechanisms. If a case of statelessness emerges it will be resolved by the Dominican Government, have no doubt," the official said.
