Dominican Republic discards talks with Haiti while attacks persist

Santo Domingo.- Foreign minister Andrés Navarro on Thursdaywarned that Dominican Republic will not engage in talks with Haiti while attacksfrom Port-au-Prince persist.

"You cannot ask anyone to sit and talk when you havean agenda of attacks and unfounded allegations against the other side,"the official said,

He also cautioned that the credibility of the Organizationof American States (OAS) is at stake with the report by the mission that visitedthe country to observe the unfolding of the government’s program to regulateforeigners.

The diplomat called reports of a negotiated postponementof voluntary return by Haitians "speculation."

Speaking to reporters before a youth rally at ruling PLDparty headquarters, Navarro added that Haiti’s attitude toward the internationalcommunity and Dominican society should change. "The Dominican nation needsto see a clear signal from Haiti’s government that its attitude towards theDominican Republic has changed.”
