Dominican Republic issues residency to Haitians

Santo Domingo.- A ceremony in which 200 permanent and two-year temporary residency cards were handed out, the Interior and Police Ministry began issuing 50,000 IDs across the country on Monday, after the National Plan to Regularize Foreigners approved the requests submitted.

Deputy minister for Naturalization and Immigration Luis Fernandez, who headed the activity said the immigration policy developed by the Dominican Republic will provide foreigners access to all benefits of any person with a regular status in a country.

He said the measure responds to concerns of the thousands of mostly Haitian people who submitted their papers since last year and had yet he received the document, adding that the issuing of IDs will continue in Puerto Plata, Santiago, El Seibo and Bani in the coming days.
