As deportation row takes root, Dominican leader trims official trips

Santo Domingo.- President Danilo Medina on Tuesday ordered government officials to limit foreign travel strictly to those with "presidential priorities."

The Presidency’s measure, which comes just hours after the government announced heightened defense against attacks from abroad to its program to legalize foreigners and deport undocumented aliens, mostly Haitian, would likely reduce the likelihood of blunders by snieor officials when traveling abroad.

Medina also ordered the heads of government agencies to “properly record budget expenses by verifiable and unavoidable commitments.”

Medina’s instructions were disclosed in a memo signed by Presidency chief of staff Gustavo Montalvo, and directed to ministers, administrators, directors, superintendents and executive directors on the rational use of taxpayers’ money.

In the memo Montalvo says the officials should send request for travel permits to the Presidency’s Administrative Office at least10 days before the departure date.
