Dominican Republic deported 33,000 foreigners since June 2015: Official

Santo Domingo.- Dominican Republic authorities have deportedmore than 33,000 foreigners who were in the national territory illegally sinceJune last year, according to figures provided Tuesday be Immigration director RubenDario Paulino.

He said the repatriations resulted from operations carriedout since June 17 last year, when the deadline for aliens to register for the NationalPlan to Regularize Foreigners expired. Of the 466,288 immigrants who registeredfor the Plan, only 239,000 qualified.

Although the official didn’t provide details on the returnees’nationalities, he stressed ensure that Dominican citizens aren’t being deportedto Haiti, as Amnesty International recently claimed.

Paulino spoke after meeting with representatives of the UNHigh Commissioner for Refugees, and other agencies, to explain the process throughwhich Dominican authorities deport undocumented foreigners.
