From sprawl to splendor: La Nueva Barquita

Santo Domingo.- La Nueva Barquita, a government housingproject in Sabana Perdida, Santo Domingo Este, will be inaugurated Wednesday bypresident Danilo Medina, one of the most ambitious works of his term in office.

The old La Barquita is a sprawling slum, but a total of 1,782families will be relocated to the new complex, on which Medina will cut theribbon at 4pm tomorrow.

Project coordinator José Miguel González Cuadra, who ledmedia executives on a tour of the site, said the work is a reference for otherpossible housing solutions for vulnerable communities.

"I really admire the work and I think the cost is inline with the investment (RD$4.0 billion), said media mogul Jose Luis –Pepin-Corripio, who called it “a change from heaven to earth.

Rain forest

González said once concluded the transfer of the 4,350people, who for decades withstood flooding from the Isabela and the Ozama rivers,the old Barquita will again become a rain forest which links with El Cachón dela Rubia Ecological Park and managed by the Botanical Garden.
