Dominican Republic to help Haiti stage its elections? No way

Santo Domingo.- Various sectors on Tuesday expressed scathingrebuke against a proposal for the DominicanRepublic to technically assist Haiti to stage that country‘s elections set for October9.

Centro Bonó think tank director Felix Roque said the bestthing for Dominicans is not to get involved and let international organizationshandle that process instead.

"There’s a lot of suspicion about elections betweenHaiti and the Dominican Republic,” Roque said, noting that it’s advisable that theDominican State keeps its distance with political events in Port-au-Prince.

The social scientist cautioned the Central Electoral Board(JCE) to let organizations such as the Organization of American States (OAS) beHaiti’s advisor on electoral issues.

He note that if the Dominican government can offer sometechnical and technological support, it should do so through inter-American andregional bodies. "With great care and tact so it cannot be said that there’ssome kind of meddling, I think bilateral relations have to be cared for andthat’s a very sensitive issue."

Opposition party slams the JCE

Jesus Vasquez, secretary general opposition party (PRM) on Tuesdaysaid the only thing which the Central Electoral Board can orient the Haitianauthorities on is "how to prepare a fraud."
