Haiti, Dominicans leaders eye stronger ties

Santo Domingo.- President Danilo Medina and Haiticounterpart Jocelerme Privert met Wednesday night in New York, where theyagreed on meetings between their foreign ministers and heads of Customs, says astatement from the Presidency that doesn’t provide further details.

It said Haiti’s president stated his desire to continue improvingties between his country and Dominican Republic, and “will do everything in hispower for this.”

According to the statement, the meeting took place in the UNGeneral Assembly.

It said Medina and Privert met in June at the SeventhSummit of Heads of State and Government of the Association of Caribbean States(ACS) in Cuba. “The leaders agreed to resume work to advance the common agendaof the Dominican Republic and Haiti and both have said they are interested inmaintaining harmonious relations.”

It adds that in his new term in office, Medina pledged to getHaiti to lift the ban on the overland import of 23 Dominican products.
