A petroglyph of the Tainos, who named the island Quisqueya, and Haiti.
Zoom Picture

A conference on the facts and considerations why the word "Quisqueya" should be included in the Constitution as the legal, proper and exclusive name of the nation whose state is the Dominican Republic, will take place in Santo Domingo during the days of the International Book Fair (April 23 -May 3), maybe at the Fair grounds if approved.

To see what this is all about, check our site: http://www.quisqueya.name. We hope that Dominican Today starts looking into this project. We are at your mercy, be part of history in the making.

Compadre ny4life, No, papa! Entiendo tu preocupacion!

I am for the name change, I think it was me who initiated this on this page about two years ago. Why? Because Dominican Republic is not a name of a country. The word Dominican is a religious adjective. Its like saying Catholic Republic. It is ok for a country to use the religious adjective in its name plus the state type (republic). But then it should also incorporate something of its own. It doesn't necessarily needs to be Quisqueya because that name is hard to pronounce and to spell for non-hispanics. My idea was to name the country officially Dominican Republic of Santo Domingo. And use only Santo Domingo in common language. It should not be a problem the capital has the same name. Look at Mexico and Panama. Their capitals have the same name as their countries.

You have a point, buenoha. In fact, every time that I talk about this country with people in the US they give me odd looks when I say "Dominican Republic", but when I tell them that it's Santo Domingo, the recognition comes to their faces almost instantly. Another example of a country having an oficial large name and coloquial short one is Venezuela, whose official name is "República Bolivariana de Venezuela".

Vaya! buenoha:

Much respect for your pioneering of this discussion on this medium.

Not too many other nations use Republic in their country's names. It's mostly used by China, Congo, or the previous USSR (Blasé Blasé Soviet Socialist Republic).
If a country is a republic, fine, but, it's not a required fact when mentioning a place?
Like the KISS concept...
However, you point out the main reason why I object to the country's title; I'm not a Catholic and highly resent the assumption that everyone should be grouped into a 'pigeon hole especially by its country". Dominicans are a Catholic order, the ones that brutalized and pratically exterminated, obliterated the native Taino Arawaks. Quisqueya es su nombre.

Part 2:
That's the main reason why I remain on U.S. soil and do not return to my native land. Here's there's a Constitution and Religious Liberty (not just religious tolerance) until further notice (suspension of the Bill of Rights).

My native land prides itself as being a Theocratic Oligarchy where the Catholic Church meddles in all the country's minute details;
Something I detest, and reject with every breath that remains in my lungs.

"The church" loves this Catholic title and will resist any change to this status quo, since it demostrates its ownership of the land and its people. I choose to remain outside "Q" because these Catholic (self appointed) tyrants have daily masses with the politicians running "Quisqueya" into the ground.

And you thought only Iran had Ayatollas? Only Iraq had Imams? What do u call a guy in a robe?

Dios, Patria y Libertad.

Pronto vendra la justicia a Quisqueya!
No creo en curas 'terratenientes', ni papas, solo en Cristo Rey!

Brother what type of nonsense you are releasing : Forget about Haiti , Where did you went to School ? In the right Society even hates have his border when it comes to intellect .

The Reality Haiti or Dominican Republic can't choose to call any part of the Island Quisqueya : Because the name Quisqueya from the First Owner of the Islands were for the whole Island ; not the Dom. Rep part or Haiti.

Stop the hates for our kids to become intellect.

I like Quisqueya like the song "Quisqueya la tierra de mis amores".
Hispaniola has too much of a historic Spanish conquistador's flavor and I don't like it.
I am all for changing the name to Quisqueya, most persons don't know where Dominican Republic is when you say: "I am from DR" and they said "Umh?".
Let's include the name change in the new constitution.
Count me in.

Well, I guess this is my buenos días to this forum; funny, I'm the only one with the name Kiskeya, yet you would like to deny my right to use it. Unfortunately the very word, regardless of the spelling you choose, was used long before Dominicans or Haitians poured out their hatred on this online forum.

I've got news for you. I belong to a growing group of people LEGALLY and CULTURALLY at ease on either side of this beautiful island called as such by the Taino, true deciders of the meaning of the word, and who it describes.

I would not think of asking for your permission to use my name. By the way, you may have noticed another characteristic of Kiskeyans, we are multilingual.

Actually, Ketly:
Quisqueya was used before the European slave masters brought your people from Dahomey, Ghana, Congo, and Nigeria. So don't try to tell us at DT, what we will do with our indigenous (some of us are partially Taino, not 100% fualani, Hausa, Yoruba,Tutsi, or Mandigo like your kinfolks) people's name for our country; We've been using it even before the mass importation of Africans to "Quisqueya". Go fly a Chichi-gua Ciguapa!

Quisqueya se queda, aunque no les guste a quien sea!

Hispanola was Colombus idea.Haiti is the native ID of the island.
In 1804 the colonialist name of Saint-Domingue drop in favor of HAITI choice.
In 1844 eastern part of the island free from Haiti prefer Dominican Republic in contrast to empire or kingdom established in Haiti.
In 2009 Dominicans want to turn Quisqueyans.Changing name is like finding identity.Spirit of Tainos is honorded .
P.S. Calling indio the black dominican is absurd. In Mexico, natives are insulted to be called indio.
