Mike Cruce came to Dominican Republic in 1986 after years of my prodding. We traveled around the country with the wilderness of Sierra de Baoruco National Park impressing him the most.

Like many foreigners who visit this country he told me his most lasting memory is that of the people…simple, weird, poor, rich and everything in between. He guzzled Presidentes, chomped on chicharrones and smiled his way through three weeks of adventure.

“It’s like a whole ‘nother country,” he said to describe his surprise at finding that his buddy’s place of birth was really different from anything in the U.S.A.

After an almost fatal accident he turned passionately to wood sculpting, and many of his works adorn ships and buildings in the U.S. and other countries.

Mike died recently after battling leukemia for months.

Hasta luego buddy, thanks for being a friend and brother.

Hola Jorge,

I would imagine from the user name you have an idea of who I am. Thank you very much for putting my dad on your web site. I miss him so much sometimes that it is hard to express. He really did enjoy his visit to the Dominican and talked about the trip, and your hospitality. He was an adventurer in many ways all of his life, and touched so many people during that journey. I guess as a child I never realized how much he was to so many people. Our relationship was growing as it does with most children as I began to realize all that my dad was. May his spirit sail the high seas as the sailor he always was meant to be.

Hello Mikey, it was hard for me to come up with some words to match his spirit, Our friend and fellow adventurer Capt. John is still AWOL though, I hope he is doing well in his mountain retreat.
