P. Pujols, a resident of Houston, Texas and a native of the Dominican Republic, wrote DT to draw attention to a development that in his view will benefit the country and pledges to work to achieve it.
“I am writing to you about a new international terminal that Southwest Airlines would like to build at Hobby Airport (the smaller airport near the city center), but it’ s being fought against by United Airlines which flies out of Bush International Airport.”
“This concerns the tourist industry in the DR and other islands in the Caribbean because if Southwest Airlines is able to build the new international terminal; it plans to fly to Mexico and the Caribbean including the DR (currently Southwest flies to Punta Cana from Atlanta with its newly acquired subsidiary Airtran Airlines).”
“Southwest has over 130 daily flights into Hobby Airport from all over the U.S.”
“Tourists from the southwest United States normally fly into Mexico, but with the current state of Mexico, I feel the flying public is looking else where to vacation. The Caribbean is the perfect vacation area, but service from Texas and elsewhere in the southwest US is very limited. Southwest might be the key to an increase on tourism to the DR.”
“I am writing to you, your readers and industry leaders because Southwest Airlines needs your help to convince the mayor of Houston and the city council to approve the building of the international terminal, because it will definitely increase tourism and commerce.”
“Please take the time to look into this matter I feel it is important to DR whose tourism is a big part of its economy.
The City Council will hold hearings starting the first week of May.”
