SANTO DOMINGO.- The nuestroshijos.com.do website is an example of one of the many ways in which technology and education can work in tandem. A couple of young Dominicans have created a site where parents can find solutions.

As well as being a couple with a child, Shirley Pérez and Michael Vilalta’s links now extend further with their nuestroshijos.com.do website.

They are the creators of a web-based directory for parents, providing options that they can explore with their children.

Vilalta explained that the idea came about when they were searching for a project “where we could make a living and obtain a sense of personal satisfaction while providing a social service, in an area where we have something to offer”. In his quest for defining what is now a reality, he said: “It’s a platform that helps society act, and which offers solutions”.

“And we think that it’s a place where parents can find everything they need for their children”, adds Shirley Pérez.

The site, winner of the Arroba de Oro website award in the applications and services category, covers themes like education, health, recreation and extra-curricular activities.

Both are aware of the shortcomings and problems of education in the home, and the couple knows that children these days need reinforcement, because this is where they acquire tools for life that they don’t learn at school. For this reason this communications medium is open to whoever wants to contribute.

“We offer a range of options available on the market for complementing education, and we organize them according to every family’s needs, explains Shirley. In addition, they have a contributor database which includes educational psychologists, pediatricians and speech therapists, among others, who cover a range of subjects.

One of the site’s advantages is that it is interactive: it contains interesting forums in which parents, most of whom are young, can receive advice and information from professionals, as well as from other parents.
