New York.– The Museum of Jewish Heritage located at 36 Battery Place, New York, will be presenting a bilingual exhibition in English and Spanish in association with the Sosua Jewish Museum in Sosua, Puerto Plata.

According to the organizers, the exhibition, which opens February 17, is titled  Sosua - A Refuge for Jews in the Dominican Republic and will be on view for six months.

There are plans for it to travel to other venues in the United States and eventually become a permanent exhibition at the Jewish Heritage museum in Sosua. The exhibition brings to light the stories of Jewish refugees that made Puerto Plata home in the late 1930s.

The settlers were mostly urban Austrian and German Jews who were professionals or craftsmen. At that time, when most of the world's nations were unwilling to help the Jews, the Dominican Republic became the exception and opened its doors.

you see this are the things people need to talk about!! good and positive, things like mass deportation of those dumb Haitians, and to bring smart, wise people like Jews, Japanese and from Europe!

Dumb haitians? you say it as if dominicans that migrate are mostly college grads...most dominicans that enter the US and other countries come with less than an 8th grade education...and that's pushing it. I'm not saying we should not deport haitians...but to degrade them as a people and call them dumb is disgusting and just plain ignorant. Think about how offended you would be if an american (as an example) would speak that way about dominicans...DR may be in a better situation but that does not make us superior; they too are humans.

As for the exhibition, that's great news; it's important to preserve this type of history unknown to most [even dominicans].

This great shining moment in Dominican history should not be tainted by the continued display of the German crosses/swastikas in the pantheon .......or please correct me if I am wrong about the origin of these four metal grills.

Well, from my understanding (correct me if i'm wrong), Trujillo actually declared war on Hitler (yeah, I know, haha) and Hitler in return sent him the metal/iron fence or whatever you want to call it. At first all you see is crosses but if you look closely, it's actually or also swastikas. I think they should stay in the colonial zone...since it's such an interesting part of the history...now I don't know if they should be in the pantheon of heroes...

I find it very hard that Haitians are dumb when they grow up learning how to speak three different languages, and one of them is not even their national language. Futhermore, degrading the people whose ancesters freed your people from the shackles of slavery as well as the rest of the world is not right. The only dumb person is you.

While I find Euromax racist talk irritating, annoying and shameful, mr. Jemesouviens, I try to see the underlying, between the lines, message of it. This message for me is that, in the transcultured, westernized mind of the common dominican citizen, the haitians will only gain respect in their estimation only when Haiti becomes as wealthy and succesful as the neighbours that are up north, that you'll only waste your time talking to them about the exploits of your ancestors (I'm not saying that they lack merit, far from it, if it weren't for them, who knows the kind of apartheid hell that the island would be facing right now), because they would ask you in their sardonic manner: ¿"Y eso, con qué se come?". (How do you eat with that?). In other words, you'll have to surpass the deeds of your forefathers, although with a fundamental difference: this surpassing would involve channeling your energies in building a successful, institutional country on the foundations that they left on foot.

what about the origin of the four metal grills in the Pantheon .......is it true they were a gift from Germany in 1934 when Germany was ruled by Hitler and the national socialists? and are they or are they not crosses/swastikas ? and is this the kind of symbol that the Dominican government wants to present to the world in an honored shrine to its X presidents ?If the answer is yes to these questions then the surviving members of the jewish settlement in puerto plata will be very dissapointed and the the ones who have passed on are spinning in their graves ....does anyone know the true story behind these grills?

Thank you Lautaro for understanding my point of view...But I want to ask you do you really think the neighbors up north will let Haiti become as wealthy and successful as they are?

No, I don't think so. Regrettably, my friend, they're still smarting from the wounds that your forefathers inflicted on their planet-sized ego to allow such a beautiful dream to become a reality. What is worse, they're claimming to be your friends, while having their guns pointed directly at your back at the same time.

To: Lautaro,
I couldn't said it any better myself. It just goes to show you that some things just never change.

First, Please let's not argue, we are all brothers. Second, high five to that museum in Sosua and to the people that saved their lives in a country like ours. And third, let's not forget that the president of that time was in total denial of whom he was and where he was coming from. And was trying to whiten the Dominican society. We share an island and I know that there is a sentiment of Unity in one side and that's a beautiful feeling but we are so different in so many ways: culturally, language, music and to the same time we (dominicans) are a bunch of hypocrites because if Haiti was richer than us, we would not mind the differences and we would all be in their asses (Haiti). But things are the way they are and I don't have an answer as to why it is that way. God bless you all!
