SANTO DOMINGO. - The City Council of the Dominican capital, bowing to the Catholic Church’s constant pressure, will not stage this year’s Carnival’s grand parade on the traditional February 25 date, which coincides with Ash Wednesday, the start of Lent.
The National District authorities today announced that the Carnival will conclude Sunday, February 22 on the avenue Mexico, with a grand parade in which more than 100 floats will participate.
More than 100 troupes are also expected to take part in the activity, where three top prizes will be awarded in the categories Traditional, Fantasy, Alí Baba, Diablos Cojuelos, Popular Creativity, Historical and Individual, coordinated by the Ministry of Culture that’ll contribute 560,000 pesos.
City Council Urban Animation director Luis Taveras said the production of this year’s Carnival has improved , with better integration with the carnival associations.

"Do you know what was one of Trujillo Down fall, the church"
Indeed, the pastoral letter against Trujillo late in his regime was intimately tied in to his demise. But do you know what was one of the pillars that supported Trujillo throughout most of his dictatorship? Same answer. The church.

There's a reason Mardi Gras is the day before Ash Wednesday. It wouldn't have made any sense anyway to have held the Carnaval in the beginning of Lent.

Why?

Joesean, because Mardi gras means "fat tuesday". It would logically have to transpire before Ash Wednesday.

No Constitution with separation between Church and State here apparently;
Thank God stuff like that isn't happening here yet.....
Besides, people have to go and get their marks on their foreheads on that Wednesday. Ash Wednesday. We don't want any laypeople missing out on that event 'cause they're celebrating a parade, now would we?

ArsenioALembertJr,
Bingo that was the point I was hoping somebody would get. The Church knows that like the traditional political parties they are losing the support of the people. If they don't force the cronies in the PLD to change the date, people will see how weak they are among the populous, when the religious callings are ignored.

lol, josean doesn't understand what a rhetorical question is. So I'll answer your actual question:
The carnaval tradition around the world is not some random happenstance: it arose specifically as a PRE-LENTEN celebration by people to let loose before the conservative weeks of length. (
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carnival ) See the carnavals of T&T, Brazil, Italy... Basically, carnavals are BY DEFINITION before Lent.

To make it absolutely clear: it would have made absolutely no sense to hold the carnaval, ANY carnaval, on the first day of Lent, which to Christians is supposed to be a period of quiet reflection.

.Canadian Judge gives 7 year old right to decide his own custody.
A 7 year old boy was at the center of a courtroom drama yesterday when he challenged a court ruling over who should have custody of him. The boy had a history of being beaten by his parents and the judge initially awarded custody to his aunt. The boy surprised the court when he proclaimed that his aunt beat him more than his parents and he refused to live with her. When the judge suggested that he live with his grandparents, the boy cried and said that they also beat him. After considering the remainder of the family and learning that violence was apparently a way of life among them, the judge took the unprecedented step of allowing the boy to propose who should have custody of him.
After two recesses to check legal references and confer with the child welfare officials, the judge granted temporary custody to the Toronto Maple Leafs whom the boy firmly believes are not capable of beating anyone
