Santo Domingo.- Joy and the color prevailed in Santo Domingo’s Carnaval, celebrated Sunday along a section of Mexico Avenue, in this Capital.

More than one hundred troupes from the National District marched past massive crowds, which swayed to the beat of the limitless enthusiasm, dancing and chanting next to them.

The folkloric event, hosted by the Culture Ministry, and the National District City Council, and sponsored by Presidente beer and Brugal rum.

Frankly, I think this mindset is what has lead to this total disregard for ethics, and morals; Some believe that our culture is just based on "Tabaco y Ron", or Merengue y Carnaval".

Please realize that the Capital's Diablos Cohuelos, Guloyas de San Pedro de Macorix, and Lechones de Santiago don't constitute "Our Culture" as a whole; There are many other time honored traditions such as woodworking, poetry, pottery, sculpture, artistry, knitting, embroidery, cuisine, bakery, confectionery, etc. To reduce our whole Culture to just young women moving their hips in sexually suggestive gestures is de-moralizing, and degenerates our traditions. We are more than just "la muerte en jeep-e", or "Rana Bola". these aspects of our Culture deserve a place in our minds. But, they were mostly childhood pastimes.

La muerte en Jeep-eta isn't!

I always thought that carnaval was the Sunday after 27th of February? Does this mean there is no carnaval on the Malecon this Sunday?
