Press Release

Toronto.- In its sixth production year, the second year it’s being televised nationally as a reality series on Nuevo Mundo Television, thirty contestants will take the stage in Toronto on August 28, 2009 for the annual Miss Latina Canada Pageant.

Among those thirty contestants, one will surely stand out. Chellie Ana Rita Mejia is the raven-haired, chocolate complexioned, fast-talking, self-proclaimed “bad girl” of pageantry, and this year she will represent her Dominican heritage, her home town of San Cristobal, and the city of Toronto in the 2010 search for Miss Latina Canada.

The 24 year old is a classically trained pianist, singer and songwriter, and has been performing since the age of three. She has performed in every talent show, fashion show, church function, pageant, and mall food court table top that she has come across.

She has served as a cheerleader for a nationally acclaimed varsity squad and for Toronto’s professional football team, the Toronto Argonauts. This is not her first time on the pageant circuit, having competed in two national pageants before this one.  She won them both.

James Avery (Uncle Phil from the Fresh Prince of BelAir) has complimented her great voice and beautiful personality. The Jamaica Gleaner has described her performance as “…A-class … strumming the keys with her fingers and making beautiful music with her voice.”

She is the President and CEO of Feroz Enterprises, Inc. and holds a degree from the University of Toronto in Biochemistry and Biotoxicology. She is currently working on attaining her Masters degree in Biomedical Engineering. THAT MEANS SHE’S SMART.

She’s not scared of needles, loves a good thunderstorm, is a little scared of horror movies (which is probably why she likes them so much), and she wouldn’t mind living on a roller coaster.

Is she 100% Dominican?

She looks like New York (NY) from Flava Flav!

She does have some very strong African features, so she may be 100% dominican, but probably not a mulata.

All of the Dominicans that I know that have pure African features like that are somehow mixed with Haitians or have grandparents that are from Haiti or the English Caribbean islands...

Good luck to her.

What kind of pageant is this? Most latina beauties would not allow themselves to fall into this category (only looking at photo). Personally, I think she dishonors the Classical Latina Beauty. I am not judging her as person, just as an image.

The previous posters fail to recognized that we are so diversely mix that we don't care about how a person look... go- on baby sister make us proud. Que Dios te bendiga mami chula.

Note: Pay no mind to some of the previous comments, they are not Dominicans//

Buenoha, It would be funny if it wasn't so sad; please stop questioning if a person is Dominican by it looks//

Hello! I'm Chellie, the girl mentioned in this article! I actually just found it and was really excited to see it! And of course I'm used to some of the negative comments that have been posted as a result, but I'm also very appreciative of some of you who have decided to support me. I am a VERY proud Dominican woman who credits a lot of the successes I've had in life to the strength and the passion that exists within our culture and on August 28th, regardless of how "African" my features might be or how much I may differ from what one poster touts as the "Classic Latina Beauty", I'll stand on that stage and represent my country and ALL Latinas (African featured, blond hair with blue eyes, dark hair with olive skin, etc. etc.) with every fiber of my being, because that's all I know how to do. And I'll make you proud! Just you wait and see! :)

A humble thanks expressed to all of you who understand, appreciate, and nurture the individual's desire for excellence!
