Regarded as one of the most important and pioneering competitions of its type, "Master of the Ocean," returns with more excitement, waves and acrobatic jumps in its 8th edition, to be held from 23-28 February.

Cabarete, a small, laid-back Caribbean beach village located on the northern shore of the Dominican Republic, is notorious for its incomparable kitesurfing conditions.

How about hosting a “Masters of Science,” or “ Masters of Math” or “Masters of Language,” oh that’s right we have a Third World Educational System at best, so I guess we can't!

All of this stuff is important too. Trust me if Singapore and Finish had the opportunity to do it they would not waste it either. I agree with you on education but we can't just stop everything else that is not educational just because we don't have it now.

We do have math, reading, and spelling competitions and they're televised on several tv channels in the DR. http://www.antenaenlinea.com/inde....so-nacional-de-matematicas-por-tv . I guess you are too pesimist to know that.

I agree with you ,ateo ,that is a fantastic destination for this very exciting sport ..it always seems to be full of young people having a wonderful time and the beaches are always clean ..out of curiosity do visitors enter through Puerta Plata airport or the new one past Nagua when they come here , Also what has happened to the various developments that were going to be too tall and affect the winds on the western end.
It will be great on TV if the cameras can focus that far out and a superb advertisement for Cabarete ..there should be some joint promotions with Cabrera and Playa Grande which has a fantastic golf course .

Belly,

With all do respect:

No one is saying sports aren't important, certainly not me.

However, these are leisure activities for the affluent and really don't add much social value other than the few economic dollars they may bring which the vast majority of Dominicans will not benefit from. Though talent is required to do any endeavor well, certainly this "sport" doesn’t produce skills need for rocket science or neurosurgery. So lets TONE DOWN the importance of this event, as it is not the equivalent of launching a Dominican Sputnik!

This sport is for the young ,most of whom are far from being affluent and it requires a fantastic amount of skill and balance especially to make all the turns. There will be visitors coming from many countries around the world and the many small hotels in Cabarete will be full and all the restaurants will do good business. Cabarete is a town that relies heavily on water sports and various day trips to neighbouring areas and I would suggest that this triathlon is very important for the town .

While the event may not register on a par with a "Sputnik," out of many similar and smaller size events is a nation's economic livelihood dependent. And just because the event in question does not bring about earth-shattering economic consequences, it's worth is, as Ricardolito states, fully valued and needed in Cabarete. Two thumbs up I say. Wishing many more similar events in the future for the DR.

Now the interloper censor is an expert on the micro economy of Cabarete after previously stating the area of “expertise" was limited to La Romana and its eastern environs!

I agree with Josean this is not sports this is an excuse for the beer companies to sponsor some T and A for a bunch of elitist kids .....are they giving out MIT scholarships in windsurfing ? ...not likely ...more like 6 packs of Presidente

I'm not saying that this is by any means more important than education but if you look on the Dominican Dreams website you will quickly find out that a lot of the business locally in cabarate donate money to the Dream project which is a NGO that brings free education to poor kids in the area of cabarete.Just like you I wish we had a Dominican Version of the Nasa project but we simply don't and each topic deserves it's comments. If we all really want education so bad I don't think we are going to get it by bringing our frustration to DT but if we unite and bring it to the Palacio Nacional we have more of chance of getting anything done towards a better education system in DR.

This is only good for the DR as it brings in $$$$ and offers world wide promotion.

But When I saw the name "Master of the Ocean 2010" I was excited but then I saw the so called sports involved and just chuckled. Surfing and Kite surfing are not sports but past-times. Sailboarding is ok but it is sailing's ugly, step child.

Belly,

I never have criticized DT or any news outlet for that matter. These news outlets are but mirrors of the society good or bad!

My critique is towards the viewing of this event with adoring eyes, giving it much more importance than just a mere sporting event.

I know its an ocean activity but you don’t have to go so deep and offshore my Amigo.

What I'm saying is that just because you and I don't consider this event to be as important as a Rocket Science Project in DR would be doesn't mean others would see it that way too, Remember there is 10 million Dominicans in DR and is not just what you or I think is important my friend.I just think each subject here deserves the appropriate comment to go with it.This may not be important to a guy in Pedernales but for those in Cabarete this is great. Como te dije anterior cada cabeza es un mundo y aqui hay 10 millones que tambien tienen su opinion de la importancia del evento.

Do you really believe this is of any importance generically or individually to even one percent of that 10 million, come-on my brother, please!

By the amount of comments in favor of it I say is important to some but anyways I'm not going to go back and forth about this topic. We have agreed on education importance. Now if you care so much for the education system what do you think should be done and are you doing anything about it and Do you need help in it because I'm all about solving problems or helping those with a plan to solve it.

With the usual daily dosage of negative stuff we are exposed to about DR, I do believe this is a positive story.

We should exploit this unique attribute of DR and, more specifically Cabarete, and ensure that the whole world knows about it and enthusiasts would flock to DR in droves, similar to the way they do in Hawaii for surfing. These would be tourists who wouldn't necessarily stay at "AI's", thereby dropping their $ into the local economy. Many of them would even set up residence in DR and bring with them enterprising minds, business and development.

Anyway, I am in support of this activity and the positive worldwide exposure it affords our country.

Wow thank you for your point. I have personally been to Hawaii many times working there and if you been to surfing areas of Hawaii as northshore and others many surfer fall in love with areas like this and most of the time bring positive change to the community. Northshore in Hawaii is a highly regarded place that is almost made up by just surfers and from my time being there is an area that has seen lots of improvement because of it's unique features and how well the area has been promoted. If cabarete can find a way to do the same this won't be like the usual come and go tourist as we know but more of a come and stay type which bring with them monetary resources into the whole area plus a better image worldwide. This could turn out like baseball have for us. If anybody in 1950 would have said DR has top talent Baseball player most people would have laugh but in the world we live in today that is NOT a laughing matter since we do because it started somewhere.

Belly,

Thank you for your kind comments.

With your first-hand experience, you are actually a better advocate for this endeavor. This is really the kind of initiative I favor for tourism in DR. We must move away from AI's and concentrate on more quality endeavors that can bring more material benefit to DR and the masses.

Yes, I'd agree with you. Some day, with this fine natural resource, DR could become a reigning power in this area-that would be so positive and nice! Yes, it would be.

Again, thanks.

well actually ,GlomarE ,Cabarete does not have really lavish hotels but the visitors can stay nearby at Sosua if they want a hotel with more stars ..the wonderful things about Cabarete are the beach and the surfy lifestyle. This event should be great fun again ..I was there some 5 years ago when they had a similar event and to just sit on the beach and look at all the colourful sails skidding across the ocean was fantastic ..there were people there from Australia,South Africa ,USA,England that I met but I am sure many more countries ..

It's a shame that water sports like surf & windsurfing do not get any support nationally or from those international surf brands who sell a lot of expensive trinkets in the DR
