Santo Domingo.– Rita Indiana y los Misterios, the contemporary Dominican sensation of 2009, is back with an unplugged concert at Hard Rock Cafe this coming Thursday, 18 March at 8pm.

Rita Indiana y Los Misterios is being described as one of the best acts to ever come out of the Dominican Republic. Rita Indiana is an acclaimed novelist who had previously collaborated on the now dissolved bands Miti Miti and Casifull.

Although she currently resides in Santo Domingo, she has lived in New York and Puerto Rico for quite some time, which has only enriched her merengue-techno fusion.

Just downloaded some of her music and videos.

If they are, according to DT, "one of the best acts to ever come out of the Dominican Republic." i can come to one of two conclusions.

1: That those making that proclamation are idiots.

or

2. The acts coming out of the DR really suck.

What we have here is bad, gutter merengue with a synthesizer.

I saw her performance last night and also Sunday night on the Gianni Espectacular Show. The girl has the "it" factor, she's fresh, stylish and avant garde. Its sad to see so much critizism for some one who is creating a very Dominican musical expression. Her music's basic background beat is that of palos, fusing it with modern Dominican musical trends like mambo and rap. Why must it be crap then to so many?? Rappers here in the US dominate the charts and are widely accepeted, why shouldn't her style be accepted also?? During her performance in the Casandras, she proved to be on point and completely dominated the stage with her presence. The sounds were crisp and clear, the guira was very defined and the drums accented the music. Just like Bachata has been discredited in our own country while welcomed by most of Latin America, so should our Palos, Atabales and Salves. We have to embrace our autoctonous culture first instead of replacing it with foreing, less rich ones.
