Santo Domingo.- The traditionally colorful and festive National Carnival Parade heated the cool temperature as crowds in the thousands enjoyed the nearly 200 original floats and troupes from Santo Domingo and the 30 provinces which took part in the event, organized by the Culture Ministry.

I went to this abomination called Carnival and I don't know what embarrassed me more. I have been to Carnivals throughout the Caribbean and have never seen such overt violence as I witnessed last Sunday. First the troupe with the Whips whipping each other and threatening the by standers had no legitimate place in a fun loving carnival parade. Then even worse was the hoodlums (delinquentes) whipping the back sides of unsuspecting young women who were just trying to enjoy the parade. To blind side them with a stupid rubber football on a string should be outlawed and given a separate carnival of their own with the Whipping Bulls so they can beat each other up to death. I can't believe that the Carnival is sponsored by the Ministry of Culture and condones this violence on spectators. This is being Uncultured and until it is eliminated, Carnival should not be promoted to tourists and on display in front of tourist Hotel row, -the Malecon. Shameless, despicable and backward!
