Santo Domingo. – The Haitian lawyer Sarodj Bertin, 22, will compete in the Miss Universe Pageant after winning the contest in Haiti, which hadn’t staged  it for twenty years, said Magali Febles, Miss Dominican Republic and Miss Haiti franchise director on Monday.

Bertin, who’ll represent her country in the global competition, won the Miss Haiti crown in Port Prince last night, out of a group of 18 beauties and in which she was selected from six finalists.

Miss Haiti, who speaks five languages strolled triumphantly in the evening gown and swimsuit segments over the rest of the contestants, and was crowned by Miss Dominican Republic, Eva Arias and Febles.

I know I will sound insensitive but this just shows how far Haitian institutions have fallen since the seisme-quake. Haiti can't EVEN host the election of it's own beauty queen. That is utterly sad and it breaks my heart if you really think about it.

No more outbursts of pride from Haitians, no more we we're pearl of the antilles nonsense, no more every blan is racist so this is why I do this or that...

Enough....

the reason is that in the various countries people have a franchise to run the various Miss Universe competitions and the same man has the franchise in the DR and Haiti ..not a matter of a country hosting but a franchise holder hosting so is no disgrace for Haiti .

When I heard about this I thought that the Miss Universe Organization wanted to offer Haiti an opportunity to participate in the Miss Universe pageant because of the devastating recent events. Oh Trump "n" nem'. lol. Realiziing that this is all based on a franchise and that the winner looks Dominican herself, it was more so an opportunity for a business, probably Dominican-affiliated, not really representing Haiti in the least. Just another public relations stint.
And Yucachu I agree, as a Haitian the pride-factor is only elevated when I hear people having shelter and job opportunites restored after what happened that's where most Haitians should be focusing their pride. Haiti already gained major "face-time" for its 15 minutes with what happened. Of course I'm still wondering who's really reaping the benefits of all of that, as people are still struggling to make way for survival from the devastation. To sum it all up, I think this pageant had very little to do with Haiti. :o(

Magali Febles has a very bad reputation for her practices in the Miss Republica Dominicana. She holds the DR franchise, but lost the one to PR which she also controlled for many years. She's been hunting for Domincan models to pose for Haiti for a while, but most DR girls refused to impersonate a Haitian especially since most don't know how to speak Creole. The whole Miss Universe thing is business as usual, so lets not make a stink out of it. The girl seems to be very tanlented as well as very goodl looking so I wish her all the best...

Sarodj Bertin is 100% HAITIAN, with both parents haitians, se lived a while in DR cause her mother was assassinated in 1995, she studied in DR, and graduated from de University there, she's a lawyer, like her mother was, but now she lives in Haiti and DR at the same time, here and there. She's very intelligent and beautiful and that's why she won.
And of course she represents us haitians, like in DR, in Haiti we have white people, black people and mulatos..so she's fine, good luck honey... We count on you

Yeah right, where? Kind of like 1% white and 2% mulatos, I guess the combine total of 3% counts too. It use to be 5% but after the Earth quake they all took off for the US, DR and France and the figure dropped 2%. Anyway, saying Haiti has white and mulatoes is like saying Argentina has Black and Native American people. Yeah true, they do, but you got to find them with a microscope.

Some of you guys are so pathetic with your superiority and inferiority complexes it's really sad.

FYI- before the rise of Francois Duvalier to the Haitian Presidency most people in the diplomatic circle thought all Haitians were mulattos for only those of that mixture were assigned to diplomatic posts. The Mulatto class were the first mass exodus ofHaitian out of Haiti. They were forced to flee Haiti after the Massacre of the Jeremie mulatto population, they were the first to feel the wrath of Papa Doc under his noirism revolution. They arrived in great numbers in places like Cambria Heights Queens were they were refer to by their African American counterparts as Creoles, and later settle in places like spring valley NY.

"ettienc-it takes 3 years to earn a law degree (fulll time)"
Ms Bertin is a Dominican trained lawyer and not a US attorney which requires a 3 year post graduate degree in law. So there is a difference in length of training and education. In the DR as is the case of many countries, you can go straight from High School into a 5 year licenture university degree program which is longer then the standard 4 years of US colleges but shorter then the American system which in addition to law school also requires the passing of the bar exam.

So if Ms Berlin graduated from HS at age 17 plus 5 years of Dominican law school, she would be about 22 years old now, exactly her present age. Which means she must have just recently finished or is about to complete her degree.

But sh..t, who cares about her degree. She is a fine looking specimen of a women. The last thing I want to do is look at her brain. I am only interested in other body parts.

Yes, she was born in Haiti indeed, but that is about it. She arrived in the DR when she was 4 years old and was raised by a Dominican step mother. She grew up and was educated as a Dominican. Ig'Bliss,

I like your point of you.....both DR and Haiti have to get their acts together; also, with limited land resources, something must be done about population control. It is rather interesting that so many western countries, which have been around since beginning of recorded history, have populations that are same or lower than DR, which is only about 500 years old.

It seems very clear that unchecked population growth and illiteracy go hand in hand, and DR, Haiti and Bangladesh are good examples of it. The land and sea have limited capacity to feasibly sustain a given population size. If we continue at this pace, soon we would be starving to death.

Maybe we'll have to resort to free condoms and vasectomies, since abstinence clearly won't work.

I saw with my own eyes the propaganda machine in haiti as well. Both sides need to drop the bs.
We're like 2 children that play together behind our parents backs.

People are surprised cause she is lightskin but contrary to popular belief, there are many lightskin Haitians.
I wish her luck
HER MOM was a well respected Haitian attorney (r.i.p) and a caring haitian dad.
the point is
1. SHE IS A LAWYER
2. SHE SPEAKS IN 4 LANGUAGES
3.SHE has MORE THAN QUALIFIED AS MISS "INTERNATIONAL"
there are many European miss beauty international that dont have similar qualifications.

if her mother was not assasinated, She might have been a strong candidate to become President in Haiti .

Wapminnin,
I'm not surprized, maybe she won because of her light skin color ?
Looks come and go but real beauty is skin deep.

She over came many obsticles in her life therefore is an inspiration to many Haitian youth, maybe she will take her Mothers place and run for the office of President, lets hope and see.

I wish the best for the Haitian People.
