Santo Domingo. – The Haitian lawyer Sarodj Bertin, 22, will compete in the Miss Universe Pageant after winning the contest in Haiti, which hadn’t staged it for twenty years, said Magali Febles, Miss Dominican Republic and Miss Haiti franchise director on Monday.
Bertin, who’ll represent her country in the global competition, won the Miss Haiti crown in Port Prince last night, out of a group of 18 beauties and in which she was selected from six finalists.
Miss Haiti, who speaks five languages strolled triumphantly in the evening gown and swimsuit segments over the rest of the contestants, and was crowned by Miss Dominican Republic, Eva Arias and Febles.

the reason is that in the various countries people have a franchise to run the various Miss Universe competitions and the same man has the franchise in the DR and Haiti ..not a matter of a country hosting but a franchise holder hosting so is no disgrace for Haiti .

When I heard about this I thought that the Miss Universe Organization wanted to offer Haiti an opportunity to participate in the Miss Universe pageant because of the devastating recent events. Oh Trump "n" nem'. lol. Realiziing that this is all based on a franchise and that the winner looks Dominican herself, it was more so an opportunity for a business, probably Dominican-affiliated, not really representing Haiti in the least. Just another public relations stint.
And Yucachu I agree, as a Haitian the pride-factor is only elevated when I hear people having shelter and job opportunites restored after what happened that's where most Haitians should be focusing their pride. Haiti already gained major "face-time" for its 15 minutes with what happened. Of course I'm still wondering who's really reaping the benefits of all of that, as people are still struggling to make way for survival from the devastation. To sum it all up, I think this pageant had very little to do with Haiti. :o(

Magali Febles has a very bad reputation for her practices in the Miss Republica Dominicana. She holds the DR franchise, but lost the one to PR which she also controlled for many years. She's been hunting for Domincan models to pose for Haiti for a while, but most DR girls refused to impersonate a Haitian especially since most don't know how to speak Creole. The whole Miss Universe thing is business as usual, so lets not make a stink out of it. The girl seems to be very tanlented as well as very goodl looking so I wish her all the best...

FYI- before the rise of Francois Duvalier to the Haitian Presidency most people in the diplomatic circle thought all Haitians were mulattos for only those of that mixture were assigned to diplomatic posts. The Mulatto class were the first mass exodus ofHaitian out of Haiti. They were forced to flee Haiti after the Massacre of the Jeremie mulatto population, they were the first to feel the wrath of Papa Doc under his noirism revolution. They arrived in great numbers in places like Cambria Heights Queens were they were refer to by their African American counterparts as Creoles, and later settle in places like spring valley NY.

"ettienc-it takes 3 years to earn a law degree (fulll time)"
Ms Bertin is a Dominican trained lawyer and not a US attorney which requires a 3 year post graduate degree in law. So there is a difference in length of training and education. In the DR as is the case of many countries, you can go straight from High School into a 5 year licenture university degree program which is longer then the standard 4 years of US colleges but shorter then the American system which in addition to law school also requires the passing of the bar exam.
So if Ms Berlin graduated from HS at age 17 plus 5 years of Dominican law school, she would be about 22 years old now, exactly her present age. Which means she must have just recently finished or is about to complete her degree.
But sh..t, who cares about her degree. She is a fine looking specimen of a women. The last thing I want to do is look at her brain. I am only interested in other body parts.

Ig'Bliss,
I like your point of you.....both DR and Haiti have to get their acts together; also, with limited land resources, something must be done about population control. It is rather interesting that so many western countries, which have been around since beginning of recorded history, have populations that are same or lower than DR, which is only about 500 years old.
It seems very clear that unchecked population growth and illiteracy go hand in hand, and DR, Haiti and Bangladesh are good examples of it. The land and sea have limited capacity to feasibly sustain a given population size. If we continue at this pace, soon we would be starving to death.
Maybe we'll have to resort to free condoms and vasectomies, since abstinence clearly won't work.

i have lived in spring valley= rockland county= new york all my adult life and there WERE never any mulattoe living in spring valley that i knew of.
between 1967 10 1970 a few mulattoes ( pratos) settled in nyack ( about 20 miles south of spring valley)
they spent a few years there and quickly returned to haiti when lunatic francois had calmed down from his usual tantrums

Yes, she was born in Haiti indeed, but that is about it. She arrived in the DR when she was 4 years old and was raised by a Dominican step mother. She grew up and was educated as a Dominican. Culturally she is Dominican, not Haitian. It is likely that she does not identify or relate to Haitian culture, I can almost bet you on that.
What positive can you take out of Haitian culture other than being self destructive and negative !!!
After the earthquake all the "Anglo Saxons" mentally retarded ONG'S are quiet and silent, the Haitians are quiet "overseas" and all over the world so it shows lack of "Stamina" ,"Fortitude"
and "pride"
There is a mistake in the article, she's 24 years old.
Her mother died in 1995
So 1995-1986= 9.

Brilliant JRRubirosa,. I see you're an idiot savant. MINUS THE SAVANT!!!!
Nevertheless, if you review or check any of my posts, I never insult or attack any poster like you just did to me, I do however, attack the idea if I don't agree. So please, govern yourselves accordingly.
I changed it my apologies.
are you familiar with what Duvalier did in Jeremie?
Sad thing your perpetual hate of the Haintian Elite is part of the Haitian tragedy, a card that have been played on the masses by every Haitian politician who wish to rise to
power, funny thing is once they get acustom to driving government issue Landcruisers you know the rest. Aristide who was supposed to be the man of the people was the best who ever done. Are you familiar with that saying United we stand devided we fall.
the alien elite behavior's before, during, and after the earthquake justified (not my hate) but my haughly contempt and disrespect for them
Two days after the earthquake they have reopened their night clubs with music blasting . They were selling caviar, expensive imported cheese and wine . Armed to the teeth, they were driving around in their amored land cruisers in the streets of Port -au -Prince offering no help.
Will this last ??

ones bringing up the color of the individual that won the contest; Haiti has so many intellectuals??? living in the dark ages and posting annoying and defased opinions.
On the other side Leonel Fernandez is doing more for haiti that the zombie president that they have.

Explain?
Sir,
I all ready knew that.....I just did'nt get Semper Fidelis which is a Marine motto, not to get into details but were you a Marine attached to the 82nd ? joint operations ? or did you earn your jumping wings threw the 82nd ? thats all.
Its like the Marines get their armor trainnig threw the U.S Army armor school at Ft. Knox home of the armor back in the days.
On the other side Leonel Fernandez is doing more for haiti that the zombie president that they have
Remember folks all those juicy contracts will be a bonanza for DR businesses. He's a true chameleon/politician
His other comment I won't waste a brain cell responding. I think haitians feel because she ran for MS DR and now she's running for Miss Haiti how can that be. Some people feel this nomination is a farce. I think she has a smoking body. OINK OINK. You will always find a small percentage making idiotic comments about race, however, the majority of haitians will support her if they see her carrying the haitian flag.
" on the other side, Leonel Fernandez is doing more for Haiti than the zombie president that it has
i have to hold on my fire and agree with him ( proof of my greatness)
Does'nt your concern in the last paragraph helps explain the complicated reality of the Island.

@ignoranceisbliss,you want me to explain?... you're kidding,right?
Dummy down for me?
It's a misconception we haitians have about dominicans they're racist. It's a false. Do your research and you'll learn about the propaganda machine that made haiti enemy number one.
Also, They don't want more poor people coming into the country. We haitians have been misinformed about DR. We need to get our shit together.
However, there's always a small percentage of a population that has blatant racist views.
On this site it's the same 7 guys.
MJEV.
I saw with my own eyes the propaganda machine in haiti as well. Both sides need to drop the bs.
We're like 2 children that play together behind our parents backs.
I wish her luck
HER MOM was a well respected Haitian attorney (r.i.p) and a caring haitian dad.
the point is
1. SHE IS A LAWYER
2. SHE SPEAKS IN 4 LANGUAGES
3.SHE has MORE THAN QUALIFIED AS MISS "INTERNATIONAL"
there are many European miss beauty international that dont have similar qualifications.
if her mother was not assasinated, She might have been a strong candidate to become President in Haiti .
I'm not surprized, maybe she won because of her light skin color ?
Looks come and go but real beauty is skin deep.
She over came many obsticles in her life therefore is an inspiration to many Haitian youth, maybe she will take her Mothers place and run for the office of President, lets hope and see.
I wish the best for the Haitian People.
