SD. President Leonel Fernandez on Monday bestowed the Christopher Columbus Order on Doctor David Lanning, head of surgery of the Virginia Commonwealth University.  The operation and medical care took place at Children's Hospital of Richmon.

Lanning headed the team that separated the conjoined twins Maria and Teresa Tapia Sanati.

During the National Palace reception, the prominent surgeon thanked the Head of State and the First lady Margarita Cedeño for the hospitality given him.

“This has been an effort which began two years ago with the birth of the beautiful Maria and Teresa, who required much collaboration and a concerted team effort," Lanning said.

The name of the hospital is incorrect in this story. It is Virginia Commonwealth University's Children's Hospital of Richmond.

Not to mention the millions of Dominican tax-payer Pesos via Margarita's department of the First Lady, to pay for this very expensive and risky operation, and the hundreds of less news-worthy babies that died in the meantime, through lack of funding of ordinary public Dominican hospitals.

This award is just to squeeze more mileage from this high-profile publicity stunt, before the election.
