Urges society to support cause
Santo Domingo.- The Dominican Fibromyalgia, Chronic Fatigue and Multiple Chemical Intolerance Foundation Inc. (FUNDOFIBRO) held its formal inaugural last week, when the charitable organization announced its mission educate, inform and raise awareness for people who suffer from those diseases and promote support among their relatives and society.
The organization said it also seeks to develop and materialize programs of action which improve the quality of life of the patients.
In the keynote speech in the activity held at Restaurant Scherezade FUNDOFIBRO President Adalgisa Pantaleón affirmed that the organization aims to provide treatment alternatives and various support options, as well as the knowledge, therapy and evaluation among other efforts. “It’s also about emotional support for the patients of the chronic diseases and to garner the support from society as well.”
And despite Dominican Republic’s lack of statistics on the malady, FUNDOFIBRO Executive vice president Dr. Sonia Read noted that the World Health Organization recognizes Fibromyalgia and associated syndrome as diseases. “The world population’s current prevalence of 0.2 to 0.5% with these syndromes represents an important number,” and urged its inclusion in the country’s Social Security system.
