Santo DOMINGO.- A show with videos, movies and photo gallery in the Arts Fine Arts Palace  today will mark 100 years since the birth of Dominican actress Maria Africa Gracia Vidal (Maria Montez).

Anniversary organizer Margarita Vicens said the presentation, to be held until August 6 and aired on Channel 11, will be open to the public the 7th day with activities throughout the country. "We honor Maria because she accomplished the important goal of becoming an Hollywood actress thanks to her high self-esteem she always maintained in her childhood and youth."

Vincens, interviewed by Patricia Solano on Telesistema, said Maria Montez’s most notable traits were her "audacity and perseverance" because as a child she played at staging a movie set and was inspired.”

It's about time that Maria Montez, a Dominican entertainment icon from Barahona, is given proper recognition locally as well as internationally.
Margarita Vincens has been researching, and documenting her life for 15 years now, and just published her findings.

Roy claim to be from down under but I doubt it. Everytime he writes, he sounds more like a Haitian, I mean, what is it that he has against us. Has D.R. in any shape or form done anything to Australia?

Yo are the second person to notice Roystone rant with the Domincan Republc, when I spoke about it I was confronted by a few people who accused me of been bias against Mr. Roy, As i see his comments they all are in many occasions insulting to all Dominican and any people with similar heritage.
Just a comment.

cheflord,

Trust me, you are not the only one who's noticed that about Roy. Others have too and have addressed it but to not much avail. There are always Dominican sellouts who side with the foreigners. Sad but true.

Indeed sellouts some are...as it seems to be the case of one member by name cucusita or gurgusita who started a series of insults towards me and others members who dared to complain about Roy and defended him very strongly even when he made more efforts in his insults towards Dominicans than then the subjects to be discussed.
Thanks for your note

Atabey,
She was a product of Hollywood USA and her DNA. Nothing to do with your "impoverished nation". She was certainly not phenotypicaly Dominican. Anyway, I have always said that some Dominican women are beautiful, clever and talented. They out-perform the men in many areas.

DONT_BE_SILENT,
Do you think that only Haitians find fault with this crime-ridden country? No, I am not aware of anything the Dominican Republic "has done" to Australia, or any other country, for that matter. Dominicans are too busy doing things against their own country and people.

There are very few Australian tourists in this country, since it has very little to offer them that Australian does not have, but better. However if you want to know how foreign tourists, (the country's main source of GDP) are treated in this country, just look at the warnings on the USA government website, and the news reports on Dominican Today, and the abysmally low return percentages.

JEM237,
There is a difference between "selling out" and facing reality. You would be well advised to do something about this country's than to attack the messengers, or anyone who defends them. Pull your head out of the sand and look around you.

Hollywood is world-famous as a significant film industry, and it held more prestige at Maria's time than it does now. It would only make sense that if someone wanted to make it as an actor, they'd go to one of the biggest sources. Her being a "product" of Hollywood isn't the case here, what matters is that she was a successful actress from the Dominican Republic, someone we can all be proud of. She was certainly phenotypicaly Dominican since there are various phenotypes amongst our ethnic group, and she falls under one of them.

She's about as "typically" Dominican as the Miss Dominican Republic pageant finalists, or Nicole Kidman is a "typical" Australian housewife.

Anyone can see that Maria Montez has a more notable amount of European ancestry than a lot of Dominicans, but I still don't find her phenotype uncommon amongst the population. I have family, peers, some neighbors of Dominican descent who look similar or close enough. Of course, they don't outnumber the more ethnic looking population either.
