Santo Domingo.- First Lady and vice president-elect Margarita Cedeño de Fernández has been given a gold bracelet that used to belong to Trina de Moya the wife of former Dominican president Horacio Vásquez (1924-1930).

Lucila Ozema Castro (Doña Nelsy) said that she was giving Cedeño the bracelet, which was left to her by her grandmother, Ramona Piantini Morales, because she admires the vice president-elect. Doña Nelsy also praised Cedeño’s work in her role as First Lady in benefit of the province of El Seibo, her native province.

Cedeño de Fernández thanked Doña Nelsy for the gift and promised to honor it in her new role. “[The bracelet] has a great historical value… it will reaffirm my commitment to this country every time I look at it”.

“Through me, all Dominican women will be vice presidents of the Republic,” declared Cedeño.

Gold bracelet is valued at US$25,000 with the current gold prices. Bracelet should be property of the DR state, not individuals, as per gift rules of other countries, and displayed for the public.

It is a very nice and generous thing for Dona Nelsy to do and that sort of spirit is sadly missing in this country ..The furure vice President was not receiving this gift while on official duties so she can wear it proudly ..when her friends give her personal gifts she is free to accept them ..If Danilo does the good job I expect of him I may even give him something that my great grandfather treasured ..

Very well said Ricardolito! Dona Nelsy's bracelet was left to her by her grandmother who just so happened to be related to Dona Trina de Moya, therefore, hers to do with as she pleased and her pleasure was to give it to the vice president elect. END OF STORY!

I agree with Rich and Cibaena59.

When in office, any gift should be acknowledged as a gift to the State. She's not in office yet.

I often wonder why the Dominican people always wish to make their political leaders out as thieves? Not all of them are like that I can imagine it's because some parties have been, but not all are. Here in the states they aren't supposed to be, but we have some who cannot handle their posts and things fall by the way side. UGH! I support this PLD political party I've traveled to the DR during Balaguer, Jorge Blanco, Hipolito and Lionel and I must say I have never seen the DR in better condition than it is now. So let's be grateful for the work that has been done.

"I often wonder why the Dominican people always wish to make their political leaders out as thieves? "

You wonder why..??? really????
I don't think most are making them out to be thieves, most are out right yelling it with on insinuations......

Why would 90% of city council members have not submitted a list of their assets?
History of Dominican politics speak for itself on this matter...

How is it living in a world where you don't read a news paper, watch tv or hear a radio???

I don't live in a tunnel, but everyone deserves the benefit of the doubt. I have been aware of political thieves there in the DR and here in the US no one says or does anything about it. Here we have lobbyist who give favors and money to politicians so they can move their agenda's in the congress and senate. What's the difference? No one goes into politics to come out poorer--not saying it's right but that's the way it is. Now if you are talking about what the PRD party did when Hipolito left office when they cleaned up leaving practically all the public offices void of any toilets, faucets, and even taking school desks etc. that's stealing because that stuff is the property of the people that they pay for with their tax pesos. Just because someone is of another party doesn't make them a thief is all I am saying. I hope Danilo does huge and great things for the DR just to just everybody up.

"No one goes into politics to come out poorer."

Yes your right but going it politics shouldn't entitle one to take what you can and screw the people that gave you that position.. Government positions like most police motto's should be to protect and serve , not gain and plunder.....The US political system is nothing if not a light not to follow in how money can get your agenda pushed through..

Hello, all politicians are the same.....with a few exceptions....but if they don't have one problem they have another. Can't stick your hands in the fire for any of them is what I am saying. for example, Clinton was great, but he had his personal down falls. Obama is wonderful but he supports a few things that the rest of us don't. BO hasn't been able to follow through on certain campaign promises that hapens too, but shall we say he is stealing and he's a crook?? No we can't say that. Same goes in DR if Lionel promised things he couldn't pull off doesn't make him a crook and now Danilo will have his chance to serve all we can do is watch and see what he does. Lionel at least worked on infrastructure (the roads/the metro) You have to admit there has been alot of progress in DR since the purple party is in power. Definitely the purpose of being in office is to serve the people and we hope that they do, but some loose their vision and end up in trouble ie: Espada, Mo
