Santo Domingo.- President Danilo Medina on Friday recognized 13 women to mark International Women's Day, for their contributions to society in education, community work, professionas, science and technology, health, political participation, sports and the arts.

In a National Palace ceremony Medina bestowed the Medal of Merit Olga Altagracia Mejia de Leclerc and Portalatina Taveras Chireno, in education, and Cándida Díaz de Ramos and Hanoi Yaquelin Sanchez Paniagua, for their professional quality.

Also recognized were Ligia Amada Melo, in political participation; Esperanza Encarnacion Tejeda, in arts; Juana Maria Sosa and Altagracia Rosario Lopez, in community and philanthropic work; and Gina Maria Ruiz Solis, in sports.

Medina also awarded Emilia Antonia Guzman Capellan and María Zunilda Núñez Payamps, in health; Algeria Ramona Aybar Muñoz and Rosanna Clotilde Elías Peña, in science and technology.
