US Peace Corps host workshops to help Dominican teachers

SD. The US Peace Corps in the Dominican Republic held the first round of seven workshops for teachers nationwide as part of the ‘I Choose to Teach’ initiative.

In the workshops held in Puerto Plata, San Cristobal and Santo Domingo provinces the Peace Corps volunteers trained teachers in areas such as classroom management, planned learning activities, group reading and work in rotating stations.

In a statement, the U.S. Embassy said the teachers involved also received books by Dominican authors to help them promote the love of reading in their classrooms.

53 Dominican educators and 15 Peace Corps volunteers participated in this initiative.

It said the Peace Corps plans to hold three workshops in of Dajabón and Elías Piña provinces in March to promote new teaching strategies and share with other professionals in an environment of support and encouragement. “The Peace Corps Education in Dominican Republic aims top support the Education Ministry’s work by accompanying teachers, tutoring students and working with families.”

There are currently 134 American volunteer technicians working throughout the country. In addition to Dominican Republic, the Peace Corps serve in 63 countries.
