Dominican Studies Institute announces fellowship

New York.- The CUNYDominican Studies Institute (CUNY DSI) is pleased to announce the 2016 NationalSupermarket Association (NSA) Dominican Studies Fellowship for doctoralstudents and faculty. Applications are due on Tuesday, March 1, 2016 by 5pm.

The NSA DominicanStudies Fellowship seeks to encourage doctoral students and faculty researchersfrom colleges and universities to make innovative strides in Dominican Studiesand to take advantage of the unique resources of the CUNY Dominican StudiesInstitute Archives and Library collections by conducting research at CUNY DSI’spremises. The CUNY DSI will award two fellowships of $5,000 each to twoapplicants.

Applicants must bedoctoral students enrolled at an accredited graduate institution, OR facultymembers in an accredited postsecondary institution. Applicants must beinterested in expanding research in the field of Dominican Studies. Doctoralstudents should submit proposals around a research topic they are consideringfor their dissertation.

Faculty should submit aresearch project proposing themes for which they intend to prepare a monographfor publication. Besides the research work itself, selected fellows must committo organize an activity in their home institution highlighting their researchproject. Winners are welcome to apply for additional funding for up to $1,500that will serve as matching funds to cover costs associated with theorganization of the activity in their home institution.

The NSA DominicanStudies Fellowship is interdisciplinary and applicants from all disciplines areencouraged to apply. International applicants are also eligible, provided theyare authorized to travel to the U.S. Applications will be selected on the basisof the research’s originality and scholarly justification. Applicants shouldinclude a timetable with the following:

Approximate length ofstay and dates;

Approximate date fororganizing event at home institution;

Expected date ofcompletion of dissertation or monograph ready for publication.

All NSA DominicanStudies Fellows are required to stay a minimum of eight weeks at the CUNY DSIArchives and Library anytime between June 1, 2016 and May 30, 2017. Fellowswill work closely with Dr. Ramona Hernández, Director; Anthony Stevens-Acevedo,Assistant Director; Sarah Aponte, Chief Librarian; and Idilio Gracia Peña,

Chief Archivist. Fellows will also attend regular meetings with one or more ofthe staff members to discuss ideas and progress. Following their stay, allfellows are required to submit a brief report (2-3pp) within the subsequentsixty (60) days after their research stay on how their work at CUNY DSIArchives and Library enriched their research project and offer suggestions forimprovements on the Archives’ and Library’s collections. Fellows are expectedto explicitly acknowledge their reception of this fellowship in all resultingpublications related to this grant.

Examples of possibletopics are:

Business areas, size,employment generation and economic impact of Dominican businesses in the U.S;

Philanthropy amongstDominicans in the U.S. and in the Dominican Republic;

Economic and socialimplications of the Dominican Republic-Central America Free Trade Agreement(CAFTA-DR) on Dominican businesses in the Dominican Republic or the U.S.;

Race effects onDominican participation and performance in the U.S. labor market;

History of Dominicanentrepreneurship, any historical period including colonial times;

Marginal return toeducational investment for Dominicans as compared to other groups;

Camila HenríquezUreña’s contributions to feminist thought and writing;

Career/life trajectoryof musicians or fine-artists whose papers are in the Dominican Archives;

Dominican LGBTIQcommunities in the U.S.;

History of activismamong Dominicans in the U.S.;

Impact of Dominicanvoters on U.S. campaigns and elections;

The experience of theDominican elderly in the U.S. concerning mobility, economic status, livelihood,etc.;

Intermarriage profilesfor Dominicans in the U.S.;

Ethnic dynamics amongDominicans in the U.S. and/or interethnic relations;

Dominican women and menin U.S. politics.

Some of the topicsincluded above are current projects undertaken by CUNY DSI. We are also lookingfor applicants who may become part of the ongoing research at CUNY DSI.

Application Deadline

We will be acceptingapplications for the NSA Dominican Studies Fellowship until March 1, 2016, by5pm. Applicants will be notified of the decision by email by May 1, 2016.
