‘Living In My Skin, En Mi Piel, Nan Po Mwen’

New York, August 5th, 2016: La Lucha Dom & HTI OneIsland: Women Edition: “Living In My Skin” is exhibited at Rio Penthouse III 898 St. Nicholas Ave / 9th FloorCorner of 155th Street New York, NY 10032. The opening reception will takeplace on August 5th, 2016 from 6pm to 9pm. An Artist Talk with special guestEdwidge Danticat on August 12th, 2016 6pm to 9pm.

“Living In My Skin” explores the complexities of themulticultural and multiracial island of Quisqueya. This body of work composedof eleven women in the arts, from Dominican and Haitian descent challengessociety norms by breaking through colonialism while channeling the originalroots of Quisqueya.

Through a variety of multimedia such as photography,collages, installation, and video we get a sense of the load Caribbean diasporawomen are forced to face from childhood. “Living In My Skin” lends itself, asthat platform to discuss the problematics that comes with traditional genderroles, racial division and identity and its effects on women of color today.

Concentrating on the female body, this selected group ofartists are fabricating key contributions in aiding to deconstruct the falsenarratives build around women, specifically women of color.

These artists are addressing the everyday obstacles of theCaribbean diaspora women. Seamlessly beauty and discomfort are combined in eachindividual piece. These are conscious artists who both understand the impact ofhistory and who create art that is a window for inspiration. “Living In MySkin” is funded by La Lucha and curated by Yelaine Rodriguez.
