Santo Domingo.- The Dominican Integrated Development Institute and leading Dominican sugar company the Vicini Group are working on a five-year aid program that by 2008 will have spent over RD$30,923,543.26 benefiting 35,000 residents in the sugar cane settlements known as ‘bateyes’ in the country’s eastern region.
The areas IDDI has been working in include the Bateyes of San Felipe, Atilano 1 and 2, Batey Central (Angelina sugar mill), Batey Hoyo del Toro, Copeyito, Contador, Cayacoa and Laura (Cristóbal Colón sugar mill), in San José de los Llanos, and in Quisqueya, the Santa Lucía, Brujuelas Sur, Santa Lucía, Caey, Canasta del Negro, Dos Hermanas, Sabana Tosa and Comate bateyes.
The projects are aimed at helping prevent and treat HIV/AIDS and to detect and control tuberculosis in 20 bateyes in the provinces of San Pedro de Macorís and Monte Plata.
David Luther, executive director IDDI, explained that the program aimed to promote the integration of social networks and volunteers and to reduce stigma and discrimination, with the ultimate aim of reducing the incidence of AIDS in the country’s eastern region.
The project is also working to improve the quality of information and health services that are provided in response to the disease, for 80% of the workers employed in the sugar mills and specialized areas in the Angelina, Cristóbal Colón and Caei mills.

They are practicing slavery for some many years,with the protecion of the Justice and Government.
