SANTO DOMINGO. - Around 0.8 percent of the Dominican population, or around 40,000 people, carries the HIV-AIDS virus, said Presidential Council on Aids (Copresida) director Leonardo Martinez.

Marking the World Fight against AIDS Day today, the official said since most people infected by HIV don’t know of their condition, to locate and educate them of the situation is the main challenge.

He said 75 percent of the people who carry HIV belong to the country’s poorest population, and live in the different bateyes of the sugar cane plantations. He said most of the patients are treated by government agencies, which receives solidarity of international organisms as well, and that each person infected requires around RD$17,000 in treatment monthly.

Martinez said starting July 1, 2009 the Global Fund’s contribution of US$48 million will be renewed for six years, to continue a treatment program for the people who’ve contracted the disease.

He said despite advances in the awareness of HIV carriers, discrimination against them in the country’s workplace still persists, which he said violates their rights.

I couldn't agree more than you do cibaeno. it is not necessary to placed that picture there. why wouldn't they just show a picture of a man and a woman kissing instead of that.

I suppose you all take offense to a picture of a woman breastfeeding, If you did not want to see the picture you should not have zoomed in on it. Get a life. "You Attract more flies with honey than with vinegar"

You don't have to zoom in on it numbskull, it's as big as day. Let me repeat the gist of the problem for someone such as myself since you seem to lack reading comprehension: Some of us look at these articles in their place of business (I multi-task all day) and having a boob pop up on your screen in a comproming position is not what I want to be encountered with when looking for news. Would the NYT website post a similiar pic with a similiar article? I think not. Excuse me for demanding some type of standards from an online publication I've been supporting since its inception.

Well, If you spent more time doing the work you are paid to do. And Less Time "Multi-tasking" mWhich Means Screwing off to you I guess you would not have the problem of your boss seeing you PINHEAD!!!!!

Since you seem to be verbally challenged let me give you a hand: Multitasking is the simultaneous performance of several tasks at once. I not only do my job, I do me. It's called being competent and efficient. And it's not about my boss seeing anything seeing as how I am the only supervisor in this section. I let my guys surf the net but if I see something like the pic on this page on their screen I'm obliged to inquire as to what's going on. One can do what one wants to as long as work is completed and a proffesional decorum is maintained but maybe It's too difficult for your peabrain to comprehend a modern working environment.

Call it as you like, and convince yourself as much as you want. I can see that you are quite the legend in your own mind , what with supervising your news stand/internet coffee shop and all. So I will not comment anymore. The comment came because these are the types of images that are being used by the worlds AIDS organizations to bring attention to thier cause. but since you have been so busy supervising/multi-tasking and don't have the capacity to handle more than two things at at time I will not bother you anymore

And you assume as much because? No gringo, I can assure you a hold a much more lucrative post but if you sleep better at night thinking that all people of color are regulated to the most menial of tasks then please continue catching your zees.

i am not sure if i saw the same picture as fedupgringo, but the one i saw depicted a guy laying the pipe, if you get my drift. though we are all ostensibly adults here, i hardly find it appropriate in this setting. and this is coming from someone who watches far too much porn.

what made you think I was refering to the color of your Skin, I guess me being verbally challenged I don't see where I would know or in fact care what the color of you skin is or really what kind of post lucrative or not you hold. It was a reference to how you described you place of work.

"go back and read your own post before you type."

Go back and read it yourself. A latin guy supervising a room full of people in front of computers automatically conjures up images of an internet cafe for you. Might not the same descritption apply to a corporate or government office? But obviously that's not the image your mind produced. I know your type. You assume too much and then get bent out of shape when someone calls you on it.

I did not know that all latins were of dark skin, Considering I am Puerto Rican and light skinned I guess I am a minority . Like 15 % of the population of the Dominican Republic and I am sure higher percentages in the rest of Latin America. So go and manage your whatever it is and google Latin Amercan ethnic divisions on your computer while you are multi-tasking.

Goulet, are you on the run or something? Every other day you've been posting from a new spot as if you're trying to stay elusive. Pay the pimp his money, please. I'd hate to loose your insight.

There you go assuming again. I use person of color as a blanket term, as it is often used to describe all ethnicities considered non-white, so you would fall into that category here in the states regardless of your skin color as well. BTW I'm light-skinned myself but I don't labor under the illusion that I am a white man nor would I ever refer to myself as a "gringo".

I am pretty sure that was my ex-wife (the one on the bottom) but that wasn't my main complaint.

I think it is safe to say that it was a mistake ,if not then they would have to put a disclaimer up
"to enter you must be 18 or older. "

Or face getting shut down...

Back to the article.

0.8%???

Take away the 4 Hs, Heroin Addicts Haitians, Homesexuals and Hemophiliacs(not a problem anymore), and what does that leave you?
It leaves you with the fact that AIDS is not a public health problem in the D.R.

Maybe, but anecdotal evidence tells me otherwise, though I hope I'm wrong. In some of the towns in the interior one constantly hears stories of some young person dying from AIDS related illnesses or of having the AIDS virus itself. I personally feel that the rate of AIDS is underreported so as to not affect the tourist industry. But again, I hope I'm wrong.

Ciby I think you are correct ...It is as though there is a terrible shame that goes with it and this causes people to not report....I remember back when this was just begining early 80s there was a joke that said What is the hardest part about having AIDS and the answer suited the times it was " Convincing your mother you were a Haitian " ....In those days the high risk was considered Gay or Drug User or Haitian so the shame is still felt here more so than in the US.....sad but true

Aside from Hemophilliacs, AIDS is a lifestyle illness. Some common sense and you should not have anything to worry about particularly in the High Risk Groups.

The figures and the percentages are almost too good to be believed but if they were true many many other countries would want to know the secret to the success. It has now been proved that when a man is circumcised he has far less chance of getting AIDS but most dominicans are not circumcised, it has been proved that condoms can drastically reduce the chance of getting AIDS yet many many dominicans do not use condoms and in fact they are not openly for sale as in western countries, the chance of getting AIDS from injections , normally of drugs is high and we all know that the use of drugs in the DR is high , so one could be excused from being very suspicious about the figures.....Just one more thing for cibaeño ..in africa and in the caribbean by far the greatest number of AIDS cases are with normal hetrosexual people.
