Santo Domingo.– Some 5,000 Dominican and Brazilian
women work as prostitutes in Suriname, where both are ill-treated and exploited,
according to the results of an investigation presented Thursday in this capital.
According to a report by Spanish news agency EFE, Dominican and Brazilian women represent virtually 100 percent of the sex
workers in Suriname, a country of some 223,000 inhabitants.
The "Trinational Investigation into the Treatment and
Trafficking of Women" and COIN research institute revealed that between 3,000 and 4,000 Dominican women are forced
to engage in prostitution in Suriname in largely clandestine transactions in
which they are maltreated, raped and sometimes even disappear for good.
The researchers found that prostitutes from Brazil "suffer the constant
violation of their human rights."
Marcel Hazeu, a representative of the Brazilian organization Sodireitos,
which participated in the study, said that although her countrywomen have in
common with the Dominicans the need to escape from poverty and support their
families, "the Dominicans have a greater awareness of the exploitation to which
they are subjected."
"The Brazilians don't organize themselves to resist, but the Dominicans
realize that they are exploited and subjected to violence, although they don't
have a community or a consulate" in Suriname, she added.
There does exist a Brazilian consulate in the small country. Hazeu said that "the big lie of the (sex) traders (i.e. pimps) is to feed in
Dominican and Brazilian women great expectations, which they never fulfill,"
since –she said– "economic earnings are scarce" for both.
The great illusion of the prostitutes is, she added, that they may be able to
marry a rich Surinamese man, "it doesn't matter if he's a drug trafficker, a
politician or a man with four wives living in different houses which he throws
out when he gets tired of them."
COIN said in the study that the Dominicans usually work in clandestine
locations, "much more hidden and dangerous than the Brazilians," and it added
that some Dominicans have disappeared in Suriname but those cases have not been
investigated by the authorities.
The heads of COIN, Santo Rosario and Francisca Ferreiras, asked the
governments of the Dominican Republic, Brazil and Suriname to establish policies
and programs to protect the rights of the women who are victims of the sex
trade.
Rosario said that some women gravitate to prostitution because of poverty and
the inequality of the sexes and she complained that the immigration laws,
approved to combat the crime of people selling and trafficking, "make the
problem clandestine and invisible and make it so that the women suffer more."
This reality, Rosario said, "demands the establishment of policies of labor
integration and the authorization of microloans so that poor women can find work
in conditions of equality in their society of origin."
Rosario also said that Suriname is a transit and destination country for the
sex trade due to the economic flows generated by its mines and casinos and
because some women can cross the border to French Guiana or emigrate to France,
Martinique or Guadeloupe.
According to data compiled by local organizations, more than 200,000
Dominican women work as prostitutes outside their homeland.

Necessity is very different than the hooker who brought down Spitzer..unfortunately some of our misogynist fellow posters dont see it that way...to them sex is to be paid for one way or the other....In a society where poverty and natural beauty are together the exploiters will flock....yes on Mothers Day all men should also consider their daughters future opportunities in this society as well

Yes sad indeed....damn that Metro....but I wish the report was more accurate in its details because to me it shows shoddy journalism. The population of Suriname is approx 458,000 not 223,000. What is happening to the DR women who have to prostitute themselves in Surinam or elsewhere to make a living or who may have been deceived into the practice is shameful. This issue of prostitution, exploitation, human denigration is not a DR, Brazilian issue, it is a human issue. Two excerpts on Suriname from the 2007 Report on Trafficking in Persons prepared by the US State Department.
oooo
"Suriname is principally a transit and destination country for women and children trafficked transnationally for the purpose of commercial sexual exploitation; it is also a source country for underage Surinamese girls, and increasingly boys, trafficked internally for sexual exploitation. Foreign girls and women are trafficked from Brazil, the Dominican Republic, Guyana, and Colombia to Suriname for commercial sexual exploitation; some transit Suriname en route to Europe. Chinese nationals transiting Suriname risk debt bondage to migrant smugglers; men are exploited in forced labor and women in commercial sexual exploitation. Haitians migrating illegally through Suriname are also vulnerable to forced labor exploitation in the country."

"The Government of Suriname does not fully comply with the minimum standards for the elimination of trafficking; however, it is making significant efforts to do so. The government investigated and prosecuted some suspected traffickers, and worked on improving victim assistance. The government should intensify its efforts to identify, convict, and punish traffickers, including any public officials connected to such activity. It also should consider legislative revisions to better protect foreign trafficking victims, and provide greater victim services."

These women are prostitutes and it is sad but what about all the prostitutes in this country who sell their precious VOTES for a chicken or a botella? Focus on them instead. One can easily understand why some of those women in the article ended up in prostitution but how do we explain how those in the news media prostitute themselves day in and day out by not doing their job and exposing wrong doing? How do we explain those prostitutes in the church and the judiciary who sell out the people of this country by giving immunity to drug traffickers and fraud artists? The banter that goes back and forth on these comments pages takes away from the seriousness of the issues that should be discussed. A little levity once in a while is fine. On the other hand is it possible that many see this situation in this country as hopeless and are trying to mask their frustration with bad humor or name calling?

I do not know what some of you are thinking. The sex ploitation of Dominican Women is horrible, and the DR Government must work with private companies, educational institutions, and concerned citizens to stop this madness. The pursuit of a $$ is no excuse to sell yourself, and for those who do, then they need to do so knowingly, and not be tricked into prostitution by the promise of a good job, or even marriage. There should be a concerted effort by the DR Government and other goodwill organizations to seek out exploited women, and offer relief by being sent home, because I am sure alot of these women will love to return home to their famiies, even with little or no money to show for their suffering, but to at least be relieved of this suffering, as they have no money to buy the plane ticket, and probabl are no longer in possession of their passports, as the pimps usually take these items first so that they would easily submit to being their slaves.

I fully understand the situation. I am also aware that many openly go into prositution to make money, as why sell your body in the DR, when men would surely pay more elsewhere. BUT, what happens when they are exploited and no one is paying them more, when they just become a sex zombie forced to work. Should we abandone them, or at least bring home the ones that want to come home but can't afford the ticket. Also what happens to all those little girls in school in the DR, do they just grow up to be prostitutes because $100 U.S. is easier to make on your back, then in a real job? Don't get it twisted this is a real problem for every country, but it should not be shelved as the problem is rampant inside the DR, as well as outside.

Some of you fail to realize that wherever there is poverty and "miseria", there is some form of human exploitation. Both women AND men have been employed as sexual laborers throughout history, and even though there are women who lack a sense of morality and do it simply to increase their income (that girl from the Spitzer scandal)or to support their vices (drugs and booze), most reasons for why women turn to prostitution most certainly has to do with their socio-economic background.
Ecomonic poverty, societal disgrace, and LACK OF EDUCATION (most importantly) are the main causes-pressure to put food on the table for their families, and some have husbands so despicable that they force their wives into that lifestyle for more money. Some women, out of desperation, turn to prositution to escape a financial crisis then find it difficult to get back to decent employment because they are subsequently discriminated against...

The 2007 Report further states:
0000
"The Government of Suriname does not fully comply with the minimum standards for the elimination of trafficking; however, it is making significant efforts to do so. The government investigated and prosecuted some suspected traffickers, and worked on improving victim assistance. The government should intensify its efforts to identify, convict, and punish traffickers, including any public officials connected to such activity. It also should consider legislative revisions to better protect foreign trafficking victims, and provide greater victim services."

Many of the women, men, boys, and girls are sold and resold several times, beginning in their country of origin (here, the, DR), the transit countries (here, Suriname) and in the country of their final exploitation and extermination (here, in large part, the Netherlands, including the colonial Antilles and Aruba ).
These woman love what they do and they do it for the money. Some of them just don't know Geography and ended up in Suriname thinking it was country with money.
When they realize that what they make per client is less then they could make here they cry foul.
These woman go by choice and don't realize what they are getting into, the pretty ones do ok but the ones that are not so attractive have a harder time working off their debt, airfare rent food etc..
Most of the time the ones that do go are over the hill hookers hoping to find a foreigner who will marry them. This is the culture !

Returning to the human trafficking topic, many of the whores are first turned into junkies and then directed into prostitution to support their habit ... or, more correctly, their monkey.
Bourgeois apoplogists of multi-millionaire pimps, which include some of the richest families in the apologists' countries, often say that most victims of drug and human trafficking "voluntarily" "practice" ["practice!" like a doctor or lawyer] prostitution.
Nonsense.
"Well, nobody forces them to take dope."
The bourgeois scum deliberately ignores that many victims of dope dealers are kids.
"Well, nobody forces forces kids to take dope."
You commie, don't talk about the capitalists [cappies] ... please ... they are our leaders.

"If the D.R. government had any decencies ..."
Thats just it. They have none.
No decency.
No integrity.
No Loyalty (except to the principles of corruption)
No concept of honor.
Moral thermometer is broken and unrepairable.
"We are just frustrated and burntout, pero no hay mal que dure mil años o cuerpo que lo resista!
It just a matter of time for the phoenix to rise!"
The phoenix passed a long time ago, and DR is paying for not catching it. The sisters, and also the under age children caught in the meat markets are paying the highest price that can be paid by a human.
The next phoenix to pass by DR will happen, when your greart-great-great grand children are voting, and they have more voting power & choices in goverment. Right now no one in DR Politics will make this a priority issue or even a top 5 issue for the females & children of DR.
"Eh pa' lante que vamos."....... those are the new dirty words in politics for this voting generation.

but you cant get the river out of the rat."
Those high position Government people:
How do you feel if the lady in the picture is your daughters? or, sisters? , or your closed relatives?
(most of them are cold blood, sorry to say that, but it is true, besides BS, cheating, lying, corruption....etc ., they never pinpoint what are the most important things to the people in DR)
