Where are the owners of these Batey's?
They should be charged with negligence of Human Basic Rights or do they have a extremely strong business alliance with the government (PROPINA) so that they are left alone
Private individuals should not assume these reponsiblities while the owners live in lavish homes and reap the rewards of neglignece.

because you see things from there does not mean you see it clearly.... examine closely this situation if you want to help ....there actually is a smear campaign against the D.R. so use caution before you judge...Or you will be just another big mouth Maxine Waters type

You assume that I don't know what is going on. Then you are saddley mistaken.
The owners don't give a damm and they treat their cattle better than the human staff.
I stand by my allegations and that the government dosen't have a problem lining its pockets at the expense of the Batey workers.

"....there actually is a smear campaign against the D.R. so use caution before you judge"
I am surprised I thought you did not adhere to grassy knoll theories!
Who is running this "smear campaign"? In what secret location do the meet?
The word campaign implies coordination of resources and efforts.
Or is freedom of expression now considered a conspiracy to smear?
If there is any "smear campaign" it must be being run by the Dominican government and the Catholic church who know this is going on and don't lift a finger.
And when the local and international community point it out what is obvious to everyone, they start crying about a "smear campaign!"
The best defense is a good offense, keep attacking the messenger so people will not focus on the message!

I agree much more can be done and will be done...this is not a case of one size fits all....knee jerk liberal reactions to movies and propaganda from certain sources will not help these unfortunate people..See Bill Clinton speak on behalf of BRA...His and Hillarys relationship with the important people on this island is well known

It's not the responsibility of the dominican goverment to take care of these illegals from Haiti. In Haiti they will have a worst prospect living in worse conditions with no work at all eating dirt cookies. The message is being sent loud and clear from the dominican goverment we will not take care or be responsible of this quiet invasion in part by haitians, it's been the dream from the very small ruling class of Haiti to get rid of their poor. The marginalization will continue, the deportations will be swifter and the dominican state has to work to improve the quality of life for it's citizens. One side of the island is trying to move forward the other side is betting it's chances on the opposite (Dominican Republic), to bail out it's poor from their own miserable and oppressive system of self destruction. These international organizations should demand change in Haiti, i dont understand with the presence of the U.N. in Haiti and no real progress. Haiti seems to be stuck in it's.

outsiders and whiners and complainers refuse to see this from any other perspective and show a lack of sensitivity to legitimate issues ie immigration and citizenship much more humanitarian work needs to be done...but without provoking a large segment of the population.....some outsiders try to promote this as an issue of race....... that concept will not help these suffering people and only arouse animosity....there are people who want to poison the well and create racial strife and they will play the slimy race card as easily here as Phony Al and Jesse and Farakhan play it in USA...You have seen these groups of Congressional black caucus members here being counterproductive....they should spend more time fixing the mess they created in Haiti by installing their hero Aristide then leaving the UN to clean up their mess..do not be deceived there is mischief at hand

Gentlemen,
Most people working in the Bateys are legal workers wether from Haiti or from some other god forsaken country..
Most of the workers are legaly imported by paying a fee to the Domican government.
The issue is the subhuman working and living conditions that exist in the bateys and that these conditions persist even though the DR government collects a fee for allowing foreign workers and that an outside agency has to assit in taking care of these workers.
these owners of these Bateys treat their cattle better. If the cow is sick it will get vet help immediatly so as the owner dosen't suffer a loss but a human is let to rot in his own waste.

listen Goulet, unlike you, i do not have to make banner headlines when i help people. i have done my fair share, thank you, and i have no need for you directing me where to help. there are enough worthy causes in the dr, so i encounter them on a repetitive basis. i do what i can, but i do not find a need to announce it in the media. maybe this is a first for you, and you are still overjoyed. those of us with a history of caring for the next guy do not need to alert the press every time we buy a plato del dia for a limpiabota!!

actually, goulet, i do not paint you as anything more than an attention seeker. anyone who has to tell the world that he has done charity to his fellow man is in serious need of psychiatric intervention. i have read this forum for many moons, and you are the only person i can recall who has informed us that he has done a kindness to the needy. to some of us that is a normal act, quite like eating , sleeping and going to the bathroom. announcing to the world that you helped someone once is like telling the world you just expended two feet of toilet paper; we do not need so much information!

i get it, goulet. you are one of the colonialist sympathisers who hold to the belief that europeans did africa a favor by colonising them and enslaving them. had they been left to their own devices, there would be no Starbucks in Johannesburg, and African kids would never know the joys of playing nintendo. well, i disagree. there are certain people who want just to be left alone, to continue the traditions of their ancestors. people deep in the brazilian rainforest do not necessarily want the trappings of european civilisation. they do not need prescriptions from white supremacists such as yourself as to what is good for them. they live their way, with their customs, and dont need people like you introducing some paternalistic idea of what is good for them. you say i have a weak grasp of facts. does this mean that you disagree with me that europe stole the lands of africa, all the americas, and large tracts of asia, not to mention australia and other parts of oceania?
From: United States
are you privy to the use of history books? is there a library in your neck of the tundra?these are not state secrets..everyone knows the history of european colonisation, with the possible exception of yourself. actually, you do know it, but your viewpoint is that it was a benefit to the native people. chains and shackles, forced labor, the middle passage and all the associated trappings of that era made the african a better person, in your way of thinking. i beg to differ.
