Miami.– Chip Hoffman had never seen such staggering poverty in his life: Poor
Dominican kids wandering the garbage heaps, barefoot, digging for metal scraps
to sell. Their hands wrinkled and scarred from who knows what chemicals in the
trash.
"Seeing this, you begin to realize how privileged you are," the North Fort
Myers photographer says. "You stand there in absolute shock.
"Tears start running down your face." Once the tears dried, Hoffman set to work photographing those 8- and
10-year-old kids called Divers. As in diving in the trash heaps.
The result - along with other photos he shot in Santiago, Dominican Republic
- will be shown for the next two weeks at Arts for Act Gallery. The show
benefits FGCU Spanish/German professor Ingrid Martinez-Rico, who was injured in
a February car crash.
Martinez-Rico and her husband, Craig Heller, started the yearly trips to the
Dominican Republic as a way for Spanish students to immerse themselves in the
language - and also to gain an appreciation for how many people live.
"Most of those students have never been out of the United States, let alone
gone to the Third World," Heller says.
Heller and Martinez-Rico have organized the spring break trips for eight
years. They work with Accion Callejera, a Dominican nonprofit group that helps
children living and working in the streets.

Here is the real issue that reflects the depths of poverty in "La Patria de Anacaona".
All the Resorts, Hotels, Concerts, and the rest of the Hooplah is the icing on the cake. Yet, the masses of the people are in utter poverty. It's more romantic, fashionable to photograph the pretty buildings. This is the real deal. Where the rubber meets the road. Back in 1974, my deceased Mother brought home a beggar boy, full of sores and hungry. His family (living in Gualey) kicked him out of the house, and told him go and beg for food. Mom met him in "Guibia" en el Malecon. Mom finally took him back home after feeding him for a week; and continued to visit him for a while. These pictures are reflective of the reason why D.R. can't deal with Ill-eagles from Haiti; Since it's already full of dirt poor people. You can't help others when you can't feed your own family! God bless those children. Save the children. Please stop selling fantasies. Let's keep it real; Not phony bologna.

Child suffering of any kind is a subject I cannot bear...If I were a better human being I would devote my life to working in some project to change any part of it 24 hours a day.... I am wretched because I cannot summon the courage to do it....I can only assuage my guilt by doing small things when I can...I am a coward because often I choose to look away....I must strive to do better...we all must devote more time to helping the children who are the future....and are not responsible for the mess we gave them

No, many people on here make it seems that as though Haiti is the only Country with poverty and with areas that are not pleasant to see on Television. When almost most of the Latin-American poor Countries have those images they are not proud of to see on the screen.

Indeed you see less of them being expose because due to less political instabilities most of these other Countries have not been the main focus of negative stigmatism.
Yet, we see more people demonizing one another, ridiculing much of every stances aim for peace and rely mostly on hatred, old deep rooted resentments and inherited false differences to go at each other's throats without realizing no matter your hues, condition and any sense of supremacy one may hold dear to their hearts to feel important about themselves that no matter what, no matter what at all, we are all indigenous to the very same World thus is what we all have in common equally.
We can amass all the amount of wealth and economical grace of success all we can all, but it will mean nothing as long as we do not have humanity and be humane to one another, to the Earth.

There need not to be wars for us to start asking for peace, there need not to be chaos for us to start asking for order as to the very same there need not to be tension to know there are fundamental problems with us as people.
Keep in mind, no matter the amount of land and territories we claim with all the much boundaries and jurisdictions we try to set ourselves apart as to being our own Countries, Nations and Empires because when all our malice is done speaking for how so negative we have treated each other and die, those territorial lands and jurisdiction will always be and belong to the one and only Earth.
It always has and always will be as we are the ones dying and the Earth itself will go on until it is its time for it to be no more... but until such time, the Earth has all the time in the World, but do we?

AfroLatino, i have posted a billion times that technology changes, but human nature does not. mankind is the same miserable species it was before Christ, with no forecast for early improvement. as you correctly state, this phenomenon of misery is worse in some other countries. the sad part of this issue is that there are folks on this very forum who represent the brigades that say that human suffering is the fault of the sufferer. if ony they would get up off their lazy asses and get busy, they too could own the empire. i love these guys whose parents emigrated to the USA, allowing them access to opportunities other people in other parts of the world do not get. they get a decent job, 23 credit cards, and lease the Audi a8. they then regale us with the opinion that there are no economically downtrodden people in the world, just lazy asses waiting for a handout! it is easy for them to issue all this bluster from New York, lets see how much they would have achieved if they were

So, how about we start looking into this common deficiency which we all have that is to simply start realizing this that it is we have in common as people instead of blaming each others as nations or Countries, races and colors, conditions and exclusion. Why must we punish each other for the deeds of past Ancestors who did not keep in mind that we later generations would still have to live with each other and one another here on that very same World they each seek to establish apart for what started it all which was people's greed and own ambitions to conquer and control.

Every child is not born with an equal footing in the world. They do not choose the life ahead in the early years. The local environment dictates thier outcome. I am exposed daily to bario life and through the support of total strangers from abroad...and seldom if ever from someone from the Dominican community who's opportunities allow them a lavish life....as i was saying...through donations from total strangers abroad, I have been fortunate enough to assist some of the kids who's life will never be given a chance by thier peers. Education and encouragement is the key to future success and that is what I and a few other "gringos" in the area are trying to provide.
Unfortunately, most will end up washing Prados and laying bricks for those who can't see beyond thier own wealth.

Okay and indeed,
So why the constant bashing of each other as how and what is the reason for its justification if we all know that much? What I may have say may very well will remain just words if we as this future generation do not act as we can clearly see, many of the now generation ruling and controling everything do not share any common care for us future generation, but it does not matter how much more or less they do for they will pass, what really matters is how much we will do for ourselves so that we will not let our future generations that is to come after us endure the same unaccountability

I hope that this will help focus more attention on the root causes of material poverty in the Dominican Republic and elsewhere .. but there exists a different species of "poverty" in those so called "developed nations" .. who's children may not be going to bed hungry every night .. but who are suffering from a different brand of deprevation .. that brought on by boredom, alienation, a lack of respect for their elders, a lack of meaning in their lives and an obscession with the cult of material worship .. the type of poverty that can lead to the mass murders witnessed at Columbine High School in Colorado .. these kinds of poverty statistics are not considered in estimating the per capita GDP .. but one cannot "live by bread alone" .. right?

The true about such photos is not about a government or a society lack of order or concerned about its children. The responsibillities rests on the parents of these children and their ignorance. It does not matter how poor you are to care of your children and I say this cause I had been in such situations while raising my children and I didn't send them out to begged. Many such called poor parents do terrible things to their childern and them used the excuses that its cause they are poor. Mothers that rather lay in any bed with any men for whatever hand-out and fathers whose some attituted are that their father never care for them so why should he care - his a big men, he can take care of himself, I took care of myself at a much younger age. They don't send their children to school cause their parents didn't. Its a vicious circle and as we moved into the future and informations runs faster now, people seem surprice at something thats been happening for ages.
From: United States
Show the photos of those parents that are living just as poor as the parents of these children and who don't send their children out to begged. If you as a responsible adult tried and make the necessaries sacrifices as many are doing to support themselves and their children -- these kinds of behaviour will not be present in our society. I know of entire families that while all being poor, some look towards themselves and responded " I will not live the kind of lives that my parents lived ". This same child seen his brother or her sister taking a different attituted and becoming a street hustler. Two neighbors both just as poor but with different opinions on life and how to deal with it. So, what this photographer needs to showed along with these photos are the parents and what they are doing in order to have a somewhat near completed picture.

you see, hectorvargas, the problem with your argument is that it presupposes a perfect world, one in which everybody is responsible, and has a serious take on life. sadly, that is not how it works. if that was the case, we would not need governments, as the society would self adjust because of the supremely rational nature of mankind. the fact is that some of us are short, some are fat, some have no hair, some can play basketball better than others, some are blind, etc, etc. we do not all have equal abilities. if we did, Sammy Sosa would probably be picking fruits, because you and i would be hitting just as many home runs as he does.the instinct to behaving rationally is an ability. some people will receive 2000 pesos today, put 1500 in the bank, and squeeze the 500 till next payday.others will blow it in one night. no amount of encouragement will change them; its just who they are. similarly, the mothers whom you so roundly excoriate for indolence are not going to join IBM tomorrow

not necessarily, Goulet. the point i am making is that the Tainos could probably have better defended themselves , had they known that the Spaniards were a bunch of reprobates who intended to destroy them. had they believed, at the outset, that the spaniards were such unrepentant scum, they would not have allowed them to amass the numbers and forces necessary to go to battle. they would have wiped them out as they landed. but they were decent people, who believed that they could treat the spaniards like the human beings they were not. this failure to detect the fact that the spaniards were vermin was their down fall, not their inherent inferiority. it was that they trusted untrustworthy scum, plain and simple. the same goes for the Jews today: now that they are aware of the fact that they are targets of nefarious intents, there will not be a second holocaust, because they will be ready next time to take on all comers!

This is what I assume is called "Superior Complex" and to think, Hitler was full of "S C" and laid Europe to waste with Millions and Millions killed and almost won the War, in my book Hitler and Columbus to name a few are no heroes to me.
"They were weak and corrupt"
Tiano's were a strong and proud people with there own system of Government, Religion [Tiano's from my understanding did not belief in the taking life, Columbus was living prof of that ] and were doing just fine before Columbus came.
"Spare me the Indian love"
In South, Central America to include Mexico call someone a "INDIAN" you better be ready to fight them, it's considered a big insult, Columbus thought he was in India and named the Tiano Indians.

mrios, you are probably wasting your efforts here, sad to say. as my dear, departed mother always said " The most miserable fate you will endure in your lifetime is trying to reason with idiots". some people hold to objectionable beliefs, such as white supremacy. but they have intellectual abilities which allow them to mount some sort of a cogent argument, however objectionable to the sensibilities. others, such as anthonyc, are both objectionable and intellectually challenged. he serves as little more than a distraction and an annoyance.

Hello
I recently learned about the garbage dump communities in the DR and have taken a job with Mustard Seed Communities - www.mustardseed.com to start a new ministry called Chrst in the Garbage Ministires - USA to offer basic necessities of food, etc and education to the people who work the dump. MSC started a school this year to offer free education to some of the children from La Union.
I would love to know more of your experiences and to see your pictures. I don't pretend to know anything - just learning and trying to figure out how to help. I willbe visiting the site in late Oct (27, 28th) and will hopefully learn more - Is there anyone I should meet there in particular?

Janiceg,
Welcome aboard.....I must admit some times you are going to be in the ride of your life, but don't take nothing personal and always remember " If your heart, brain and mouth / typing fingers are not connected " you will serve only yourself....

May God bless you, Janiceg.
It takes a special person to volunteer, and an even more special person to help, and minister to children. Assuming that your mission is an Ecumenical endeavor, I wouldn't know who to recommend for information; You will have a myriad of sources since the country is fundamentally "wholly" Catholic.
Again, May God bless you.

So, how about we start looking into this common deficiency which we all have that is to simply start realizing this that it is we have in common as people instead of blaming each others as nations or Countries, races and colors, conditions and exclusion. Why must we punish each other for the deeds of past Ancestors who did not keep in mind that we later generations would still have to live with each other and one another here on that very same World they each seek to establish apart for what started it all which was people's greed and own ambitions to conquer and control.
Try to adopt a Dominican Child! I tried. It is next to impossible. They don't want to have a program that will help the kids because it will cut a source of revenue.
How sad indeed, years back I knew a School Teacher where I work who belonged to one of those Church ran "Help the Children, Fund Crap" he had been mailed photos and a complete back ground on the Child, so when I informed him I was going on vacation to the DR and if he would just give me his address I would visit him and would personally hand him gifts and money...To make a long story short, the Church creeps refused to give any/all info. regarding that child and also refused to call or email me back, which sounded like a total "RIP-OFF" to me and all in the name of GOD, I'll call anybody that would mislead, lie, steal, cheat and swindle in the name of GOD what we called them in L.A... "STREET PIMPS" which means "Anybody who benefits from other peoples misery in the name of GOD, HELP and HOPE. I'm always reminded by these words..."Money is the root of all evil" and "It's not money, But the love of money"
Give...Give...Give..... And you'll see nothing will change, you will then create a give me, give me society with no incentive to help it's self, but if you give them enough building blocks for positive change, then you are helping them help them selfs, and to become self sufficient....in other words I can give you one Million dollars stand back and WOW ! watch you loose your mind and self destruct, But if i went as far as helping you earn and make one Million dollars it would only serve to be an inspiration so others may follow. Identify the need, never give cash, you buy the products needed and always do a follow-up. It would be nice if and when the next Country donates building products not money, but still someone has to do a checks and balances with a complete follow-up. I only hope it's you, you sound like someone who really cares. "You are only rich, if there are poor" GOD BLESS YOU.
It would be hard to believe that with all those FRANCO"S given there isn't some BACK SCRATCHING going on , the Mexican call this LA MORDIDA. When will the rich of the World realize you can't buy your way into Heaven, this World is full of Selfish and Greedy Human being, just think if everybody cared for his fellow man this Planet Earth would be a whole different place, and true before any European set foot on the Island of QUISQUEYA the Native Tiano's lived the perfect life just think what is known about them is.....They were Children like, Peaceful in nature, Farmers and Fisherman everything they ever wanted the Island of QUISQUEYA
As I was saying....Food was plentiful and disease was scarce but all that would change with the arrival of Columbus in 1492, and the rest is History, we cannot take responsibility for atrocities which took place Centuries in the past but as Humans.....It is our responsibility to help our Fellow Man. I will leave you with this ....Imagine if...The Tiano's were a war Tribe let's say headhunters and / or cannibal's...It would be easy to think things would have turned out a little different. TAKE CARE .
And where are they now?
It is estimated that over 8 Million Tiano's from present day Dom. Rep. Puerto Rico and Cuba perished threw slavery, Starvation, Decease and flat out murder at the hands of Columbus and his Sailors and later those darn Spanish of that era, also one has to understand that the Church of Rome turned the other cheek, one must understand that the Tiano's were viewed as heathens, savages and later demonized [ execute those who are unable unwilling to be converted to Christens ] which in there minds it justified the harsh treatment of the Tiano's.Columbus also ordered the complete destruction of all / any remnants of the Tiano Cultural and religion, The first complete and total genocide of a People and Nation in the Western Hemisphere, just think next time your in Santo Domingo, smack at the National monument [ Popes car parked in front ] which glorifies Columbus as a national hero with a large light pointed towards Heaven [cost $$]. tell me what goes threw your mind ? Take car
it was a rhetorical question.
I was pointing out that the Taino Society was so backwards that a handfull rag-tag adventure seekers wiped them out.
I'm sorry you missed my point but, Money, Greed, Power was the beginning building blocks to there total destruction and since then nothing has changed, and has been repeated over and over again,
Tiano's may always be viewed as backwards people but modern man has really done a number on the Earth and one another, you see we still have not learned from history, maybe one day we will look back and think.......Or maybe not, just react.
Spare me the indian Love.
The Tainos, like the Aztecs and Incas were vile backwards people who practiced war and slavery just like the Europeans. In one aspect they were worse. Many of the so called peacefull loving Indians practiced Human Sacrifice and in a few cases canibalism.
Their society was so weak and corrupt they were defeated by a undisciplined forced even though they out numbered the invaders by up to 1000 to 1!
They Lost,. The Better people won.
look up the meaning of the word TIANO......And don't mix Aztec's with Tiano's
"They lost, The better People won"
