SANTO DOMINGO.- Thousands of people yesterday went to get their cards "Solidarity" and "Bonogas for homes" of RD$700 and RD$238 respectively, in the centers that began to operate, but the long lines and heat made them forget the benefits of the government program and railed against those who were distributing them.

The distribution began yesterday across the country as people went to retrieve the plastic, worth RD$700 for food and RD$238 for subsidized gas monthly.

Young and old alike formed lines with their certificates in hand and a slip of paper with their turn in the distribution procedure, as some people complained that priority wasn’t give to the aged, the ill or pregnant women.

The goal is to issue the card to 400,000 people who can go to one of the 550 places installed for that purpose across the country, to benefit 800,000 poor families, with a total of RD$730 million for the rest of the year.

This is really an innovation, instead of making favorable legislation for small businesses to thrive, and hire personnel, so they can support their families. The government chooses to give out stipends, and free food. Sort of what Reagan did in the eighties with the "government cheese", and what Juan Bosch regime did in '63: Hand out cooking oil, canned chiken, etc. All these handouts are really not the solution, but, a band aid treatment to a cancerous sore.
They must be taking lessons from the backwards next door neighbor Cuba; Will the "libretas" be distributed soon, like they have in Socialist Cuba. 2 eggs per family per week, 1 pound of rice per week? This will produse the same attitudes in character that Cuba, Russia, and China has produced. A generation of demanding, groveling beggars, and misfits.
Provide the citizens self-help opportunities, a hand-up. Not a soup kitchen approach to an economy with no opportunities. Bosch was right in 1 point: Planting seeds helps!

The dawn of the cashless society.....If you have no cash,,,,They'll give you a card with susistence for a month, if you behave and don't talk back.....1984?

The New World Order is alive and well in DR; Who's next Haiti? The UN, the world bank, IMF, and the DR must have "partnered" for this effort.

well, i have posted several times that the government has never had any interest in preparing the populace for self sustenance, therefore programs like mass education receive little or no attention. it still lives in the mindset of the Balaguer times, where the benevolent abuelo will give you what you need, as long as you accept the quid pro quo; vote for me. it amazes me that a government made up of men who are old enough to remember and analyse the dismal failure of welfare in the USA, seeks to institute such a miserable system here. grown people do not need handouts. it is demeaning to an already downtrodden people to stand for hours in the noonday sun, waiting for food coupons.it must be debilitating to the ego of an unemployed man to watch his woman stand at the back of a disorderly queue, in order to get a piece of plastic which declares that he can eat today. in keeping with the Olympic athletic theme, i think these guys have torn a tendon in their brains!

if it is a one shot deal, then, Goulet, is it not even more pernicious? what are the folks to do after the coupon is exhausted? would it not have been better to direct the funds to something lasting, than to give folks a few platanos and then pat themselves on the back and say "we have done our duty to God and the Queen"?

there you go again, getting choked up over the kids. i admire your humanity, but even that is not going to save us from these savage beasts who are intent on destroying the little self respect that these poor folks would like to have. i have always said that if there was really such a thing as re-incarnation, i would return as a mortal epidemic, wiping out the vermin of the earth with alacrity and aplomb.and, come to think of it, since we are not sure about this issue, i would caution certain types to be on their best behavior: you have been put on notice!!

I see lots of comments from people from the United States. I am interested to know when your last visit to the Dominican Republic was and what you personally are doing at home and abroad to give a "hand up". Please let us know.
