SANTO DOMINGO.- Several senators called on business, the Government and international organisms for greater support of the production, culture, tourism and construction works of the country’s border region, “to increase jobs, stop the emigration, expand its contribution to the national economy, to improve the standard of living of our people.”
Dionis Sanchez and Juan Orlando Mercedes, of Pedernales (southwest) and Independence (south), respectively, said they are confident that the Government will place the funds that the seven border provinces need in the bill for the 2009 Budget. The Dominican-Haiti border is approximately 370 kilometers long.
Interviewed by the also border province (Elias Piña) senator Adriano Sanchez Roa on Digital 15, the lawmakers of the ruling PLD party said society has accumulated a debt with the border, and that the time has come for justice, paying with transforming actions. They also request free zones to operate in the region.
